This is the only thing I’ve ever agreed with the Duggars about. Those dolls look absolutely demonic.

I remember babysitting as a kid and having one of the girls chase me around with one of the CPK’s that “ate” food so it could “eat” my hair. This was of course after a few dolls had already maimed some little girls after their hair got caught in the mechanism. The only time I’ve been afraid of a small child wielding a toy.

Adopted children, Gothard teaches, carry the sins of their biological parents with them.

Wait, so is adoption of real, live babies an evil thing to ATIers???

It might be surprising to many to discover that a “family-centric” worldview such as Bill Gothard’s would have anything against the idea of adoption, but Gothard’s writings and teachings are decidedly against the practice. Though never stating outright in print that adoption is wrong for a Christian couple, Gothard’s lectures—and personal counsel to many families—demonstrate his belief that the benefits are not worth the risks. Any Advanced Training Institute (ATI) family considering adoption is asked to first consult the ATI staff. Gothard’s CARE Booklet on the topic offers so many warnings and case studies of adoptive failure that its cumulative effect is most certainly to dissuade prospective parents from considering this option. Although he does acknowledge Moses and Esther as instances of biblical adoptions in Scripture, he believes that adoption is a cultural, not a biblical, convention: “It is significant that our modern concept of adoption in unknown to the Law which God gave to Israel.”[1]

Wow, religious nuts just hate children don’t they - contraceptive is sin, abortion is sin, adoption is sin; who the hell is going to take care of these unwanted babies!!! What if the parents died in a car crash? Could you adopt their child without letting Satan in then? Or did Jesus intend for that baby to die of dehydration shortly after the parents fiery wreck? Or is that why you need god parents? So confusing, no wonder lady Duggar always has those crazy eyes.

And sometimes, they give away adopted kids that “don’t work out” to sex offenders:

I think I remember reading about someone who adopted children whose parents died in a crash after an aunt and uncle turned the kids away because ATI or similar preached this. All they care about is keeping sinners out of the compound.

This isn’t some isolated shit on the outskirts of evangelicals.... this crap was taught to me two decades ago at MULTIPLE churches or conferences my mother dragged me to. Churches bring in specialists who have divine insight into all of the ways the Devil infiltrates your life. One of those specialists claimed cable television was literally a window for the devil to look inside your home.

You’d expect the asshole would simply not have cable, right? Nah... instead he “never walked in his house naked”.

My neighbour’s mother growing up had a constant running list of all of the things that were “devilish.” My parents had to calmly explain to me that the woman was “stupid” and “don’t listen to anything she says” in the most respectful way they could manage. Which was, you know, not very respectful. My parents are dirty atheists, so I got in all sorts of trouble growing up laughing at Christian kids thinking they were joking about the idiotic things they said and then eventually realizing, nope, not joking.

No, you can get pregnant even if you allow those plastic paragons of evil into your home, but they’ll curse you to Forever Labor. Staring at you with their dead doll eyes as you’re unable to push your baby out until your godly midwife stops treating your difficult delivery and instead takes the time to expunge all of Xavier Roberts’ vegetable/human hybrids from your house, because dolls are evil jealous fucks who will resent any time you spend with an actual baby instead of playing with them and learning to worship the Dark Prince...I guess. I don’t know for sure, I’m not batshit crazy.

But, aren’t all children, adopted or biological, God’s children? And isn’t adoption a good thing b/c you’re bringing more people into the religion? And hasn’t Michelle spoken about adoption in the future? And doesn’t taking care of a doll help the real young girls to learn how to mother, which is the ultimate goal?

I think the underlying premise of your question, that these people are Christian, is perhaps flawed. In my opinion actual Christianity (as in actually following Jesus’ teachings, or attempting to) is pretty rare these days. I don’t know what these people are, or most evangelicals are, but I do know Jesus would want abso-fucking-lutely nothing to do with it.

She talks about adoption, but that plan would be eliminated as soon as a pregnancy test came back positive.
