    What’s most conspicuous to me about these idiotic posts regarding “real heroism” is that they’re couched in zero-sum terms, as though both a very high profile (and very, very wealthy) person coming out as trans and someone involved in dangerous military operations are in direct competition for a limited supply of heroism.

    Also, like fuck any of these people care about soldiers except as, as you say, “good optics.” I’m just glad that Perry has decided to waste a huge amount of shitty people’s money on a doomed campaign.

      Oh absolutely. And, of course, most show their true colors really quickly when they throw transphobic comments into the mix. “Blah blah blah real military hero man, blah blah blah Bruce fake woman mentally ill.” I doubt they actually give two shits about the military—look at how we treat our veterans, after all; it’s just another excuse to project machismo.

      Yes. I pared back a lot of thoughts that didn’t seem germane to the main thrust of this post, but here’s one related paragraph that missed the cut:

      Briefly, let’s just stipulate that the Luttrells are heroes. They may have fought in shitty wars and done some shitty things and held some shitty political views, but they have exhibited a courage you don’t see very often. So has Caitlyn Jenner, in a completely different way that should be completely allowable. We can have both, and we can learn to be comfortable with whatever discomfort that arouses in us.

      It was a widely-reported “political decision” that one of the main lessons Perry took from his 2012 run is that he didn’t “look smart”. And so instead of actually learning anything, he just got some quasi-hipster frames and instantly every conservative media organization ran pieces about the new Perry who’d be so much better this time around.

      As to whether it was ultimately his decision or his staffers - does it matter? I’m sure it was a decision made around a conference table.

      Just another tactic by the conservatives to coddle up to “real americans.” How can you possibly complain without sounding like you “don’t support the troops.” they sure know how to use buzz words and confuse the real issues. It’s like the people that buy into this shit don’t seem to notice the same people are continually cutting funds for veterans and the programs that would serve to make their lives a little more bearable.         You know, as idiotic as these statements are and as toxic as they may be for the trans community in general, I don’t feel especially compelled to protect Caitlyn Jenner from them.

        Why? Because this is her party. She reaffirmed to Diane Sawyer last month that she is a staunch, dyed-in-the-wool Republican and wouldn’t have it otherwise. So. Ok, gurl. You go ahead and call Ricky and Teddy and you can work this out amongst yourselves. Let me know how that goes.
