NYU law prof. Stephen Gillers: “Donating $2000 to a political campaign is a not a basis to question the judge’s impartiality when a candidate becomes a defendant.”

Gillers went on to add, “These are not the droids you are looking for.”

Contributed twice to Hastert’s campaigns? Wow, those are some expensive handjobs.

How can you possibly expect the feds to have the time and resources to deal with the inherent corruption in our system when they are dealing with the far more pressing issue of sad old men withdrawing the wrong amount of money to pay off somebody they fucked 30 years ago?

Showing everybody that even the Speaker of the House is within the reach of law enforcement is a good start, no?

I guess. But charges based on structuring and exculpatory statements made to investigators are the kind of penny ante bullshit that degrades trust in law enforcement.

He taught a trial practice class I took in law school several years back, and although he seemed mostly like a nice enough guy, I once dared to question a suggestion he made about my choice of wording about something or other in front of the imaginary jury, and he gave me the most absolute stone cold, bone chilling death stare. All I could do was stammer an apology and thank him and move on (which admittedly, a dumb law student shouldn’t be questioning a federal judge about that sort of thing.) But anyway, I don’t know if he would use the same look on a former Speaker of the House, but man - I’d crumble like a back pocket graham cracker. Cuff me, put me away, everybody can just go home.

Dunno, in some ways it might be worse for him. “Bastard pederast, took my f’ing donation @(#&$*&#(@^#$” Hastert. I know some very anti Obama democrats, and not just the racists.
