Gov. Chris Christie said he would be in favor of allowing casinos in North Jersey if some of the revenue is used to aid Atlantic City

    Because that always works.

We residents of Northern NJ would really like to turn one or more of our beautiful towns into ghetto shitholes and then send a chunk of the profits to the last city that casino gambling turned into a ghetto shithole. I see no downside to this.

This will be good for northern NJ, once Christie is done throwing billions at this failed project (in case you can’t tell, that is meant to be a megamall with a ski slope and amusement park inside. In the foreground are protected wetlands, lol)

I’ve only been to Atlantic City once, about 15 years ago. It was The Saddest Place on Earth. And I LIKE casinos. (as entertainment, not necessarily as economic development tools)

I live not far from Atlantic City...I have good friends who are feeling the full impact of these closures. Unemployment is rising rapidly and the Atlantic County housing market is one of the most depressed areas of the country. This has got to be the stupidest idea ever to help Atlantic City. Granted it is the casinos themslelves that dug us into this mess...for years they sat on their laurels and assumed they would be the only game in town. The refused to invest into the city and actually make it a “resort.” The thrived on the idea that people were “afraid” to leave the casinos. They got greedy...and the workers of S. Jersey are paying the price for that greed.

I spent a weekend at the Revel right before the closure was announced. It was so sad. The people who worked there were all super nice and all were really apprehensive about it. It was terrible. I still feel awful about the idea of all those people losing their jobs at once.

I was there that weekend too, but while the staff was very nice, that hotel had perhaps the worst layout of any building I have ever been in.

The same sort of thinking is what has led to every bohunk town building convention centers attached to hotels. Despite all the documentation and statistical evidence to the contrary, each and every town that builds such a thing will tell the tax payers that their town is different from all the other failures and then suck a ton of taxpayer money to build yet another failing convention center. And the public ends up paying over and over and over to keep the building afloat. While the city fathers' favorite construction companies walk away with their pockets lined with gold.

Ditto the Olympics and many new sports stadiums.

Wouldn’t it be neat if cities built attractions and amenities and infrastructure that were MORE targeted toward the needs of residents instead of tourists and suburbanites?

Last week Christie was actually ranked lower than Trump in republican presidential candidate polls. Not that I think polls are very accurate, but it’s a prime example how far he has fallen.

theoretically this isn’t a bad idea. Do you know how long it takes to get to AC from everywhere in NJ? the answer is forever. Do you know what the atlantic expressway looks like on a friday or a holiday weekend? no cause you’re not a sadist. Having North Jersey casinos will most likely make a crap ton of money for the hoboken/jersey city/new york crowd and will be way easier to get to than the godforsaken northern pineys... Now i say theoretically cause god knows we fuck everything up here in NJ and it will most likely fail 1/2 way through building and be an eyesore much like many of the projects this fair state takes up (yeah im looking at you 1/2 finished mall/indoor ski slope that looks like rusted out shipping containers and smells like poop. in the middle of the meadowlands...)

We’ll fuck it up. And most people who I meet visiting AC are from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. Others are from closer places like Asbury Park. I don’t get the impression from my New York friends that they have any interest in visiting down here no matter what I say about the beaches, food and friendly locals.

Casinos in North Jersey might actually have a shot at being successful, since they’re very close to a lot of people, unlike Atlantic City (although I would prefer if state governments could be a little more creative than simply suggesting more gambling every time the state needs more money—which is always). And while they would almost certainly hurt AC, AC is in many ways its own worst enemy. AC, put bluntly, is a shithole (I grew up going down the shore, so I know it’s surrounded by some very nice and charming areas like Longport and Margate). The casinos are old and decaying, and even much of the new construction (I stayed at the Quarter at Tropicana a few months after it opened and it remains the worst and most disgusting hotel stay of my life) is shit, although somehow the Borgata seems to have turned out somewhat nice. But still, almost everybody thinks of Atlantic City as a shithole, a punchline, and a place for degenerate gamblers and slot junkies. The streets of AC are lined with “WE BUY GOLD” shops, and many other businesses that cater to degenerate gamblers (although I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to White House Subs and Formica Bros. Bakery—still the best), and you never want to find yourself walking around the city’s streets at night.

Until that changes, nothing’s going to change.

Dear GOD, do I want a sandwich from White House right now.

But yeah, it’s hard to pass AC off as a premier tourist destination. God knows they wanted to with the Pier at Caesars and attempting to shine up the White Horse Pike on the way into town.
