This is something that baffles me as a bit of an outsider (disclosure: am man) - I got into a minor debate with someone on here a while back when I claimed that it’s difficult to call yourself a feminist and at the same time avidly consume fashion mags that exist to shame women into buying product. Another poster informed that no one is allowed to define what feminism is or isn’t, which I found kind of intellectually lazy. While I do think that feminism is a vast spectrum of choices, I do think there has to be some standards, you know?

Going to agree with brighter here, and also point out that there is plenty of backlash against “choose my choice” feminism, even here on Jez.

My husband likes me to wear thongs. This has not swayed me to buy any. Ever.

And apparently, it can never be said too often. Why do I feel like we’re going to see it as a tattoo soon?

Yeah but I feel much more empowered in my thong. Panty lines are so disempowering.

It’s so rare that I wear anything that shows a panty line. I seriously haven’t worn a thong in over a decade. I prefer boy short type panties.

Most traditionally cute briefs/granny panties are NOT empowering for my butt. I feel like they cut across the cheeks weirdly and then I get the dreaded quadrabutt and am disempowered by the need to pull at it all day. I like thongs and (shudder) “cheekies” for maximum butt cheek freedom.

WTF at all the incarnations of ‘selfie’?! STOP IT, STOP IT NOW! It’s out of control and makes me want to stab someone (usually the person using the word).

Also, most dudes I’ve been with gave less than one half a shit about what my undies looked like. If we were going to do it, they wanted a naked lady.

Lastly, wear undies that make you comfortable. If you underwar is uncomfortable, it’s the worst thing. Just make your ass and tittes comfy and be happy.

I’ve learned the hard way I buy underwear that I like and feel sexy in. If I go spend bucks on sexy lingerie he’ll look at it for about half a second, tell me how much he loves me and how sexy I am, and then rip it off. It makes for very pretty floor decoration.

omg if I was getting busy with a guy and his pants dropped and “FEMINIST” was written across his ass, I would come without him having to touch me. I don’t know if that’s a particularly feminist way to feel about it, but honestly.

If underpants that say “feminist” are what makes the difference between being a feminist and not, I’m going to need someone to print up some underpants that read “rich,” “successful,” and, “tolerant of mediocrity in others,” and I’m going to need them to do it stat.

I prefer the ones made by my local Feminist Action Collective and close friends who enjoy DIY screenprinting. All our girlies got these as presents this year. Chyeh.

Yesssss! Awesome piece, and gratifyingly well-written—“navel-gazing” is exactly correct, this analysis of the trend is so spot on:

The impulse to differently politicize the body rather than depoliticize it altogether is a fool’s game. Confidence is only political power if it turns into action. Consumption will never be the locus of feminist empowerment; print that on my underwear, and then burn it.

Gorgeous. The transformation of feminist impulses into consumerism has been a great boon to the preservation of (and distraction from) inequality.

Reminds of the great pinkwashing: the enveloping of queer subjects into the stifling arms of capitalism — it both depoliticizes their queerness and potentially disrupts the political power of “queer.” Queer subjects are finding acceptance into society, only at the cost of their subversive potentiality.
