    I read somewhere that civilized society is nine missed meals away from anarchy. I wonder if we are closer than that.

      Things have been far, far worse in this country. The Civil War and it’s aftermath, for nearly 50 years after, were the most violent time in this country’s history. Thousands were murdered every year and hardly any of the murders were solved; most but not all of the violence was the KKK and other supremacist groups. Then you had the first World War, where anarchists went wild on the East Coast. And in the 1930’s, during the height of the Great Depression, violence again picked up and we almost slipped into fascism as our political system almost fell apart. Then you had the race riots of the 1960’s, in which hundreds of cities burned on a regular basis. Then the murder rates again shot up and stayed high throughout the U.S. until the late 80’s. We’re not even close to touching the violence of any of those eras now; it’s just that people know nothing about their own history so they always think they’re living through the worst of times. We’re now actually living through a rather peaceful time in American history.

      They’ve been everywhere today expressing their views as if we were the ones that need to be convinced of the error of ours ways. I even wondered if Gawker is being taken over by racists more than usual or if it’s that I noticed them more because decent, non bigoted folks post less on Sunday.

    I hope to God black men in New Orleans barricade themselves inside their homes for the next week. It’s going to be open season on them, especially since New Orleans has the absolute worst, most corrupt police department in the country. They won’t care who they kill, as long as they get revenge on the community at large.
