I shared these thoughts elsewhere, but may as well do so here where there’s more of a chance they’ll be read since the article was just posted, but the public shaming of this guy is incredibly wrong. He was thirteen and fourteen years old when this happened and was growing up in an environment that was, at the very least, incredibly repressive. It’s easy (and let’s face it, enjoyable) for people to point the finger and call him a pedophile now since he’s an adult, and famous, and has expressed intolerant ideas, but at the time this happened he was a child himself. There’s no indication that he has EVER done anything like this in adulthood, and there’s no reason to think he would based on the facts of the case. We like to tell ourselves that the child molestation taboo is derived of our concern for the wellbeing of children, so why does that concern seemingly vanish as soon as one of those kids acts out sexually themselves? Nonsense. We need monsters to fear, despise and punish, and that’s a hunger we will feed much more readily than any desire we may feel to empathize with, support and care for someone who was, in all likelihood, themselves a victim of child abuse.

  You missed the point entirely. Josh Duggar is just the collateral damage of his parents being wingnut fundie assholes. What you see happening is people reacting to hypocrisy and injustice by pointing out the utterly fucked up way he was raised by two utterly fucked up, crooked fame-whores.
  
  The rage comes from the fact that the Duggars have said not, as you say, “intolerant” but hateful things about a lot of others. They’re fucking sanctimonious phony garbage and I gleefully root for them to fail. Josh Duggar isn’t a pedophile, but he is an asshole, and I am relishing every moment of his public takedown for that reason alone.

The truth is for fundamental religions it’s easier to blame the victim than face the problem of evil. If they see the person being abused as innocent and a victim then one must inevitably question why god would allow such a thing to occur. But if the victim even slightly deviated from the myriad of rules fundamentalists hold women to then god is no longer to blame, the victim disobeyed god and was no longer deserving of his protection. There certainly won’t be any soul searching as to whether the tenet of female submissiveness to male authority played any role in the abuse, though.

One effective way of sinking a child into lifelong depression and anxiety: frequently accuse the child of “not listening to Jesus in your heart” and then spanking the hell out of him or her with a “rod of correction.” My fundie/homeschool teacher aunt did that to my cousins for several years and they’re all now drug addicts.

  Raised pentecostal. Physical, emotional and sexual abuse is very common. Everything I did was Of the Devil and they got to do whatever they wanted to get it out of me. My 20’s were a solid mess—drugs, inappropriate sexual stuff. Then 20 years ago, I quit blaming myself, moved 3,000 miles away, and now and have a happy little atheist family of my own. At the VERY least, CPS should come see what’s doing in that house. Josh learned that somewhere.

  In a spiritual sense yes. It annoys that people fail under what Christianity says about criminal behavior. Yes, he is clear of his sins in the eyes of God. Does that mean he should punished in secular world for what he did? Yes. When a person does something criminal, Christianity believes that a person can clear their sins in front of God, but still must suffer the consequences in this world for their actions. A person who commits capital murder and is sentence to death can be forgiven in the eyes of God. Still means he can get the needle.

And naturally it’s the victim’s fault if the abuser hurts someone else because she’s obligated to come forward, even though she’ll be treated like shit and he won’t face any consequences, anyway. And, hey, what do you tell someone whose sense of self was violated by loss of her physical autonomy? That’s she should double-down on that body-doesn’t-really-belong-to-you thing by laying herself on an alter to serve Him.

This really makes me sad because as a kid, I was taught from these materials, and it was damaging to me as a person. I have made changes in my life to heal those scars, but seeing this group and like-minded people be exposed for the hypocritical, self-serving assholes they are makes me feel vindicated for all the anger I felt but lacked an outlet to express it.
