If there’s one thing dealing with the Irish side of my family has taught me, it’s that they’ll really react well to a video of English people telling them what to do.

That was my first thought seeing Stephen Fry in this. I mean, pick the most upper-crust, Oxbridge Englishman possible & have him talk down to Irishmen about their politics/religious choices. “Don’t you want to have what us English people have?” That sounds like a great idea.

Did you listen to what Fry said? He was wonderful and thoughtful and was obviously speaking at the request of Aisling Bea - who might have some idea what Irish people are like herself.

Is abortion still illegal in Ireland? Where’s the video for that?

There have been videos about that, and no if you had looked it up it is not illegal but it only allowed under certain circumstances which is very limited. But it is still a shitty thing and it needs to change. The reason why there is video for this is because the vote is for same-sex marriage in a few days.

I consider that the limits that are imposed for someone to get an abortion are tantamount to abortion being illegal in that country. You’re right, though, not technically illegal.

Yup, somewhere at the BBC. The presence of Sara Pascoe and Katherine Ryan leads me to believe it was around the time they taped Frankie Boyle’s Election Autopsy (which is absolutely hysterical if you have any interest in UK politics).

Oh yeah, and go Yes vote!

The more I see of Trevor Noah the more worried I get that he is painfully unfunny. The only thing that deeply offended me about those Twitter jokes was that most of them were operating on chain email/airport greeting card levels of humor. I liked his standup special but what are we going to do if that was just a fluke, you guyssss? John Oliver is only on once a week!

Oh, well. At least he’s cute.

Yeah, but I think he just needs time to grow. People were weary of Larry Wilmore, but he has been on fire and I’m sure Stewart wasn’t perfect at the beginning.

In all honesty I have never watched The Daily Show, so I have no idea whether or not he is a good fit, but I will say that - at least judging by the opinions of my peer group - Noah is considered to be consistently funny by a fair portion of South Africans. Personally I also find a lot of his more South African orientated work to be very funny. I was a little surprised at the idea of him hosting a television show, though that may just be because we don’t have as many of these Daily Show type programs here (though we do have the Late Nite News, which is very funny if you’re aware of South African politics, but probably just confusing otherwise.) If he can adapt, he should be fine.

Fry jokes, “I don’t know if I’m in favor of gay marriage myself...my husband is.”

    Because Fry is brilliant.

I think he did too, a little. I love Fry and, some tone-deaf comments about female sexuality notwithstanding, he’s never let me down. Well. He let me down a little by being gay and therefore not falling in love with me but I’ve moved on from there.

THE LANGUAGE IS “IRISH,” NOT “GAELIC,” MR. FRY.

It was really strange for me to hear Aisling Bea calling the language Gaelic - I wonder did she do it just for the “Gaylic” joke? I’ve never heard Irish referred to as Gaelic within the country, and never heard it referred to as anything BUT Gaelic outside Ireland.

Technically, they are not all Irish comedians, but they are certainly all British.

edit: with the exception of Rich Hall who is American of course.

Are you trolling or do you actually not know that Ireland is not part of Britain?

I’m not sure which is worse.
