Why why WHY do people think women lie about rape? What do they think Emma has to gain by making this up? How do they account for the fact that Paul Nungesser has been accused of rape by multiple women?

This is very very similar to anti-vax rhetoric. False rape accusations and severe reactions to vaccinations happen, but they happen at such an astoundingly minuscule rate they shouldn’t even factor in to the discussion. Then a small coalition of very very loud people make bad arguments with enough truthiness to sway some other people and then the “unbiased” media gives both sides an equal platform (see also- climate denial “science”) and then still other people think that the ultra rare instances (false accusation or vaccination reaction) may be more prevalent than they are in reality. And thus reality is perverted by stupid people.

Uh, because some have before? That’s not to say that it’s common, studies show false accusations to be in the single digit percentile I believe. But saying “Women don’t lie about rape” is just as stupid as saying “Half of all rape accusations are false” and I’ve always disagreed with the modern feminist argument that false accusations never happen.

Columbia’s new “sexual respect requirement,” which can be fulfilled by watching a movie or doing an art project, really seems to have done its job.

As noted philosopher T. Swift once eloquently stated, “Band-aids don’t fix bullet holes.” Columbia is reaping what it has sowed—which is discontent, mistrust, and even more misogyny.

I work with Title IX. Let’s be completely fucking fair here as 18 years of no consent education can’t be made up in orientation as the WH guidelines want you to. Endemic problem that’s not just up to colleges to solve.

I agree. However, I don’t agree with Columbia’s response: “Let’s watch a video and think that’s going to completely solve this clusterfuck!” It’s just making it worse.

If she were the victim of any other crime this would be considered deplorable, and the posters would probably be taken down. I still can’t reconcile that people think women make this shit up.

I see that smaller versions of the posters are also postered all over the 116th street subway station, the stop you take to get to Columbia.

I know I’m going to get flamed for saying this (probably by many of my friends here) but I think that the way Emma Sulkowicz has managed the aftermath of her alleged attack is a bit self-centered.

Consider Sulkowicz’s interview with NY Mag:

The last time we spoke you said you had filed a report with the NYPD and they were starting to investigate. What is the status of that?
It got transferred to the district attorney’s office, and I decided I didn’t want to pursue it any further because they told it me it would take nine months to a year to actually go to court, which would be after I graduated and probably wanting to erase all of my memories of Columbia from my brain anyway, so I decided not to pursue it.

Did the police seem to think there was a case there to pursue?
Yeah, they were going to contact the other women who reported against him, and they would have subpoenaed the information from the university files.

You were also hoping to file a complaint with the police regarding how you were treated. What happened with that?
I was contacted by an investigator who was really, really annoying to work with. He would call me randomly, and make me repeat everything that happened. He kept telling me I had to come into the station, and obviously I don’t want to deal with the police any more right now. It’s so disorganized, and it’s really upsetting to work with them at all.

If Sulkowicz is as committed to justice as she claims, why would she drop the case? I find it odd that she thinks the process of a trial is too onerous, but she’s willing to lug a mattress around for an entire semester. I totally understand Sulkowicz wanting to put the trauma behind her after she graduates, but again, using the rape as the basis of a burdensome performance art piece and accepting an invitation to the State of the Union Address are not the actions of someone trying to put an incident behind them.

Also, I understand her right to feel safe on campus, but considering the fact that the case at this point boils down to her word against his, is it not unreasonable to expect that Nungesser be expelled? I don’t doubt the very highly probability of Nungesser’s guilt, but there is still an imperative to not expel someone based on an as-of-yet unproven accusation.

As for her last response, yes, dealing with the cops can be very trying, and I’m sure having to repeat the details of her attack over and over was horrible, but those are also integral aspects of the same justice that Sulkowicz wants for all survivors of rape. Being asked to come into the station is not an unreasonable request, at all.

Sulkowicz is incredibly brave for putting herself out there on behalf of victims. But I think she is also a bit disingenuous for choosing to bring attention to herself rather than taking the opportunity that was presented to her to pursue actual justice.

Dealing with cops and ADAs is trying and tedious for a fucking reason. It’s their job to do as thorough an investigation as possible. She may not understand the reason they ask the questions they do, but they are looking for any and all evidence to both HELP her, and prevent the other side from destroying her. I am beyond frustrated with this entire case, and with the way Sulkowicz has handled herself. I will go so far as to call total bullshit on her reasons for not following through with the police investigation.

I agree with you. I actually didn’t know she asked the DA to drop the case. This is a red flag. If after nine months from the incident happening the DA was still willing to take up the case, there is no reason to not pursue it....but instead to make herself a media sensation and give dozens of interviews?

I’m not thrilled she choose to do her protest as a school project, or that she chose to carry the mattress to her graduation.

She just spent, how long, doing this project and talking to the national media? Did she really think this was just going to be a chapter she closed at graduation?

    1. Fuck this, and 2. i’m not going to say I’m ever shocked by the fact that some wet turds will spend huge amounts of time figuring out how to discredit victimized women while also offering unsolicited comments about these women’s appearances.

But like....this is weird, right? Like where did they come up with the idea that Lena Dunham directly enabled Emma Sulkowicz’s actions? Like obviously a big part of me is like eff these guys, yadda yadda, all the outrage they’re obviously thirsty for, but the other part of me is kind of just like:

    Fun Sabo story:

I saw him speak in this CPAC session about “reclaiming cool” from the Left and he kept getting distracted halfway through sentences and not being able to complete them. He sounded doddering. Between that and his carefully-selected “edgy” tee shirt I almost felt embarrassed on his behalf.

Sulkowicz, as a private citizen, is obviously the bigger victim here, but just for the sake of clarification, is there any evidence Dunham lied about being raped beyond her changing the name of the rapist? Her name appears to have replaced “DUKE LACROSSE!!!!!!” as the thing Neckbeardia screams in response to any and all rape accusations.

Yeah to my best knowledge there were two instances, neither one of which actually had evidence that she had lied about the actual event. 1. That the name she gave was fake which she readily admitted was true...she used a fake name because she wanted to talk about the experience but didn’t want to be dragged into anything with him and 2. There actually was a student around the same time at school with her with the fake name she happened to use but she publicly stated that was a coincidence and wasn't him.

No, there’s no reason to think Dunham lied about her rape. If anything these assholes should be applauding her; instead of naming some guy she just talked about her own personal experience as a victim.

So, I - regretfully - decided to check the Twitter page out. they call it “freedom of speech”. So tipically stupid, claiming you can say anything you want because you have “freedom of speech”. I almost left a comment but I frankly can’t have most acid reflux because of this.

What people don’t realize is that Free Speech is only valid through the government. The government cannot censor you and you are allowed to say whatever you’d like without criminal punishment (barring a few things like profanity and defamation).

Private buildings? Private property. Freedom of Speech does not apply. Private citizens? Not the government. They have just as much of a right to their Freedom of Speech as you do.

As many people have said, Freedom of Speech does not equal Freedom of Consequence.
