I want car manufacturers to create some sort of technology that makes it impossible to text or surf the internet or play a game on your phone while your car engine is running. Because it’s clear people can’t control themselves.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to beep at someone after the light turned green because they screwing around on their phone.

FCC regulations specifically prohibit devices that intentionally block, jam, or interfere with radio communications such as cell phones, GPS, and Wi-Fi.

I bike commute and talking and texting while driving is an epidemic. Also lots of people doing that long thumb scroll, which indicates a lot of Facebooking/Twittering going on.
The texters/scrollers have basically shut down all driving concerns except not hitting the car directly in front of them.
There is this kind of intermittent heroin nod they do between their phone screen and the 10 feet in front of their car.
There is so much more than that happening on the road, including me on my lovely Fuji.
The number one thing that makes me feel safe on my bike is knowing that I’m seen; I don’t feel that when you’re on your phone.
Please don’t do this, America. It gives me the bike willies.

Just to be fair, I regularly see people riding bikes and texting as well. Far less than drivers, but still, seeing them do that frustrates/scares me.

This would be the same thing if cyclists were also in 2 ton metal boxes capable of high speed.

I honestly don’t see this behaviour a lot, but it seems far less dangerous than if a motorist is doing it. To my view anyway.

More ruined cars = more car sales. It’s really very simple.

I was doing that one day and I thought, hey this is probably a bad idea.

We just need to learn to put our phones down, really. I am glad I learned how to drive pre-cell phone age. I’d probably have been one of those negative statistics otherwise.

Traffic deaths kill well over twice as many people as murderers do in America (and at high per-capita rates, significantly above average for the developed world). Imagine if we put as high a priority as a country on reducing the former as the latter? I don’t even think it’s all bad cultural stuff stemming from lax moving violation/DUI laws, I’m sure our terrible infrastructure factors in too. I know my county seems to have a policy of installing streetlights only after the second or third pedestrian fatality on a given street.

More people die from traffic deaths than from terrorists. Look at all we do over terrorists.

True! Although, on the other hand, given that our efforts to fight crime and terrorism have given us the War on Drugs and Iraq respectively, maybe I should be careful what I wish for.

I realized this morning, while picking up my phone to respond to an email at a stoplight, that it really did create a tunnel vision and I wasn’t seeing anything but the car in front of me.

The problem isn’t just drivers, though, but the people writing to drivers and expecting an immediate answer. I see those “It Can Wait, Text Stop Five Miles” on the highway and know that neither my boss or my partner will wait five minutes for a reply without snapping my neck.

No offense, but you really need a new boss and partner if they’re both that demanding.

I saw a BART employee driving a BART maintenance vehicle on I-680 and he was texting at the same time. I had to laugh.

Once as a pedestrian, I almost got hit by an AT&T utility truck that had a “don’t text and drive” bumper sticker. And of course, the driver was texting at the time.

After a few more hundred thousand fatalities we’ll start seeing laws where people who do this have to deal with the consequences.
