Based on the polls, the referendum will definitely pass, as long as everyone who says they’ll vote yes does so. (After last week’s British election stunner, this is hardly a sure thing.)

This has led the Yes campaign to focus increasingly on turnout. This ad of theirs, which encourages people to make connections across generations to vote, brings me to tears every time I watch it:

Good lord. It’s completely unreasonable of me to feel so, since my grandparents emigrated from Kerry in the ‘20s, but that ad gave me a huge swelling of pride. Call it pride in humanity, how's that?

Just got back from a trip to Ireland. The for and against posters are on seemingly every pole in the country. Definitely seemed to be more for posters than against though! #dotherightthingIreland

ETA: How refreshing is it to see a member of the clergy/anyone openly acknowledge discrimination?! Rock on, Sister Kennedy.

The we already have civil partnerships argument doesn’t fly for me, if the point is they can almost get married as it is then why not allow full equality?

There is no reasonable argument in favour of a no vote so organisations like Mothers and Fathers Matter are trying to confuse the issue with irrelevant ramblings, I’ll be glad when the referendum is over so I don’t have to see their awful posters anymore.

I have a Greek friend who informs me that in addition to inventing democracy (meh), yogurt (nope), pita bread (definitely not), the sandwich (again no) and the gyroscope (seriously?) the Greeks definitely invented being gay.

It will probably pass and will suspect that more than 58% will vote yes, also once again religious Americans are meddling in Ireland and they have donated a huge amount to the No campaign. It is interesting that Ireland probably will legalize same-sex marriage before USA does in every State.

They also give a bad name to great Americans who are not assholes or backwards, but people in Ireland do know that the bigots are a minority and some Americans have been donating to yes campaign.

I’m so glad that Sister Stanislaus Kennedy plus other liberal-minded nuns and priests are making their voting intentions publicly known prior to the May 22nd same-sex marriage referendum. Surely, they are helping change hearts and minds — the non-given would be by how much — so they deserve a lot of credit for speaking their minds.

Paraphrasing (the wonderful) Marian Keyes, it’s the right, fair and decent thing to do.

I wish Australia would vote like this. I think it would overwhelmingly pass, given at every poll public opinion is strongly in favor of allowing same-sex marriage. Hell, even if it was entered into Parliament, there’s a very good chance it would pass should ministers be allowed a conscious vote. Yet time and time again, it gets nowhere. It’s so frustrating and disheartening, especially when a conservative country like Ireland is able to at least put this to a vote - we can’t even get to that stage... Instead, our conservative government changed the law to define marriage as between “one man and one woman”. Fuck all this. I need a fucking drink.

Ireland is not a conservative country especially the cities, and the reason we are putting it to a vote, is cause we put everything important to a vote here, any change to our constitution or treaty is put to the irish public.

I don’t know what it is, but evangelicals relying on 200,000 immigrants from Eastern Europe and Africa for a no vote is really pissing me off. Some of those immigrants I’m sure left their country to flee persecution. Some left for a better life. Then to vote no on this? Fuck off. I'm not even sure what I'm trying to say.

Also, the Right is usually strongly anti-imigration. But after treating immigrants like dirt, now they are all “ok you guys, I know we shit on you all the time, but now it would be really convenient for us to use you!”

On the “family values” horseshit, some calculating Republicans are trying to bring in black churches and more traditional Latinos. Happily, those good folks are rightfully saying too little, too late.

As an Irish Yes campaigner, we’re kinda terrified it won’t pass! It’s likely to be really close; divorce passed by less than 51%. The polls are in favour, but they include casual Yeses who might not vote and “quiet Nos” who say they don’t know if asked face to face but will vote No in the privacy of the voting booth. Sr Stan and others like her (Daniel O’Donnell of all people!) who appeal to the soft Catholics are great. Just hope it’s enough! If you’re Irish, or know Irish people, get the vote out!

I’m also terrified that it won’t pass. Divorce only went through bcause of the terrible weather in the West. Everyone may be rolling their eyes at Breda O’Brien and the Iona Institute but they do have their supporters, unfortunately.
