You know that’s Bo Diddley and not B.B. King, right? Or do all Blues musicians look alike to you?

Growing up in Mississippi, loving the Blues isn’t a choice - it’s a way of life, it is life, our blood seems to pump to its sad, unsteady rhythms from before we understand why the guitars moan. The ghosts whisper, lingering on the breeze, and we come to know them through the music. Muddy Waters. Robert Johnson.

BB King was legend, yes, but he was different because we could see him play, his smile and his talent even in his later years, undeniable. Having to add him to the realm of ghosts is sadder than any of his Blues.

I’m from Mississippi, and not only did I enjoy what you wrote... I thought it made far, far more sense than the critique from this panhandlinpaul jackass.

Mr. Peanut and I were fortunate enough to see him in concert a few years ago. Blues are not my thing, but that man could tell a story...

While his entire career was a treasure and this video doesn’t specifically highlight his talents it fills me with joy because so many gifted musicians share the stage with him to pay their respect. It’s not just that they are great jamming but that they encapsulate in this moment what B.B. King was (and will always be) in the history of 20th century music: one of the greatest.

Humanity is a little worse off today because we lost such a talented man.

Even though I rationally know he was old, and I knew he was ill, he always seemed like he’d live forever. It seems like anyone relevant with a guitar wanted to play with him.

I took my mum to see him a few years back. When I came out of the washroom I couldn’t find her. I asked the staff and they said, “Oh she’s backstage.” I stick my head in the back and there she is, sitting on a couch, with her string of pearls, beside BB. Trying to pick up the King. I’m all, “I can not take you any where.”

The juxtaposition of that gorgeous playing with the preceding advert for Pitch Perfect II is quite jarring.

Ha! Yeah, sorry about that. I just dragged it straight from YouTube. I love how the piano player just busts out laughing during the James Brown collapse at the end.

This is very, very sad. BB King is one of the three greatest bluesmen of all time, without question.

I love all his tremendous number of classics, but “Gambler’s Blues” is absolutely my favorite:

As a blues/jazz guitarist, he is one of my main inspirations. I almost can’t play major key blues without copping licks from BB.

He was brilliant, a national treasure, and he belongs to the world.

Bye bye, BB. [ tears ]

That’s fantastic. I love the recordings where you can hear the audience participating, like a call-and-response in church.

Clarence Gatemouth Brown (a wonderful, groundbreaking player and singer in his own right) disparaged BB King because he sounded like a preacher sometimes when he sang. I’m not a religious person, but I don’t find that to be an insult at all. BB preached The Gospel of The Blues.

The Thrill Is Gone. But it’s not really. B.B. lives on through his music and influence, an immortality of blues.

I was hoping he would be on Letterman. Letterman used to have him as a musical guest a lot, maybe it’s because of Paul or Dave. Either, he was always enjoyable to watch and in the little interview, too.

I remember Letterman asking him why don’t he sing and play guitar at the same time, King said because his fingers are stupid.
