I was so excited during Age of Ultron when they went to Wakanda.

“IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING.” I said to myself, “THEY’RE NOT FUCKING AROUND. MARVEL IS FOR REAL MAKING A MOVIE ABOUT A NINJA AFRICAN KING, AND IT IS GOING TO BE INCREDIBLE.”

I’d normally be concerned about her ability to shoot action, but I think the Marvel system kind of creates a safe space for directors not experienced with that kind of material (the Russo Brothers did a great job in Captain America 2, and they’ve never done action stuff).

also sidenote: its a little strange that a female/african-american director is only being courted for Captain Marvel (female superhero) and Black Panther (black superhero).

like...why are they also not being considered for the other 12 million MCU films coming out?

I probably would want to do some kind of origin story, where you get to the core of it, before they get the powers. That’s a quote from this article.

I thought Selma was a great movie, but I’m nervous about someone who is not a comic book fan directing. I really want Captain Marvel and Black Panther to be done well, because I can see people (you know who they are) saying “See? This is why black and/or female superheroes don’t work on-screen.”

Also...why could she only do Captain Marvel or Black Panther? Is there a reason why she wouldn’t be able to do Doctor Strange or Inhumans? I mean, we’re not trying to say black women can only direct movies about women or black people...are we?

  Even in comics itself, it’s pretty common for writers to get gigs on books/characters they aren’t super familiar with. As long as you’re willing to do the research and can find something you love about the character, it shouldn’t be an issue. I’d say the same goes for a superhero movie director. Sometimes an outsider’s perspective is incredibly valuable for creating a story with a fresh take.
