Here are some “before photos” - one can see here more clearly the fallen house was, IMHO quite stupidly, built mansion not only on an unstable cliff - but on an ‘overhanging’ unstable cliff. Never a smart thing on a lake with a continuously falling water level, as is clearly the case here...

Wow, I assumed that lake was just muddy and disgusting because the cliff had just fallen into it but I guess it’s always gross looking!

I think this every time I see houses on barrier islands - only one of the fastest moving geologic formations on Earth. As is the case with those cliffs, water-based erosion can make some really pretty landscapes out there, but it sure can be a real bitch at times.

There’s people out in South Dakota that, very literally, built their houses on top of natural sloughs that were were used as construction dumping grounds and then filled in primarily with sand.

Why? because the sloughs were a natural part of a lake and the filled out lot had a decent view of it.

      These are 1.5-3million dollar homes.

Built on sand. In an area that was frequently and naturally flooded with water. Near a lake. In a state where it doesn’t just rain, it monsoons.

People say you need to be educated in order to get wealthy but real life evidence points to the fact that’s only true in maybe 1% of cases whereas the other 99% are so mentally incompetent that it’s any wonder they manage to not pass out during the day by forgetting how to breathe.

They said I was daft to build a castle in the swamp, but I built it all the same.

That burned down, fell over, then fell into the swamp, but the fourth castle...

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who went there.

Yes, after burning down and falling into the lake, that is the same house.

Why was the house 7,000 square feet in the original story, then 4,000 square feet in the second story? Did it have lap-band surgery?

I think Chan mixed up the price of the house, $700,000, with the square footage.

3000 square feet fell off the cliff before.

This story from a local history lecture has always amused me: Back in the "frontier days", a pioneer decided to build a big new home on the picturesque banks of a nearby river. As the project went on, he noticed an ever-increasing audience of Native Americans that were stopping to watch, often smiling and pointing. One day, he went over to speak to them. "Are you impressed by this new house? I bet you've never seen anything like it." One of them said, "Yes, it's very big. We can't believe you're building it there, though - it floods every year!"

What kind of cheap fuck wouldn’t consult a geotechnical engineer before building their mansion on a cliff?

Last I read, I thought that they did and the engineers told them they were crazy. They just found one that would fulfill their request.
