Finding out you’ve been fired by being locked out of your email?! My anxiety is literally going to go through the roof every time I have a technical issue with my email, now.

When I first heard the story, I almost couldn’t believe it was real. But then people started corroborating it. Truly unbelievable.

I used to work a job where they would change the key code on the door when they fired someone. You had to push the button to be let in, and the whole time you’d hold your breath wondering if it was you, since most of the time they’d wait for the fired person to come to work before saying anything (they’d meet them at the door, escort them in, and then escort them out).

      Management was terrible there, too.

I actually have some insider knowledge on this. AJ originally wanted to have a sophisticated audience, but failed miserably because that’s not what the majority of the US wants. Also they had trouble getting sophisticated audiences in the US (i.e. Those who read the Economist) because a significant portion of tbose people are Jewish, and they’re very anti-Israel. So it sucks, but their plan to be only serious journalism didn’t work either.

Reporting the facts regarding Israel’s behavior is not “antisemitic.”

I stopped reading at the Qatari Royal Family, the owners of dead and soon to be dead slave laborers building worthless world cup stadiums by proven bribery and corruption.

Yup. One could make the argument that companies that sponsor FIFA, and the IOC (among others) should be brought to task for supporting these corrupt organizations.

For all its faults, BBC isn’t half bad! At least for breaking international news.

i’d choose BBC over CNN any minute of the day but there really isn’t any coverage of less mainstream US domestic issues, for obvious reasons

Looks like they ran it like most American companies.

Luke alleges that he was fired after clashing with Mahmud, who was promoted from video editor to Senior Vice President of Broadcast Operations in early 2015 despite an apparent lack of qualifications for the promotion

Yep, just like America. *salutes nearest flag*

Yeah, one of the people I talked to made that point pretty emphatically. It’s no worse than any other place she’d been. It was just all coming to a head at once, and spectacularly so.

It really crushes my soul to hear how shitty working in TV is. Like, not even “it sucks like other jobs” or “horrible people, but it’s glamorous.” Nope, it’s like “Hey, I haven’t been paid in a month.”

Incompetent, dysfunctional, and sexist? And people thought that Al Jazeera wouldn’t be able to fit in with the rest of the American news media!

Anstey wrote “We have a critically important job to do. To tell the stories, and cover people caught up in events, that need to be heard. To provide information that is trusted, that challenges, that informs, and ultimately that inspires. This may sound like great PR, but it is a fact.”

But can the critically important job also be done by women? Or will the station continue to be run based on crazy Middle East-style sexism? WHICH WILL IT BE, ANSTEY? Straight answers appreciated.

Very interesting write up about a very fucked up work environment. FWIW, All things considered also did a recent segment on this:
