I’m all for increased opportunitites for women to direct, but I’d be happy if none of them went to smarmy propagandist Kathryn Bigelow.

Campion, Coppola, Reichardt, Welbon, etc...there are plenty of talented women who aren’t unrepentant tools.

Also, Shonda Rhimes would be an excellent choice if she chooses to pursue it.

As a film fan, I’m seriously curious: why the Bigelow hate? I truly liked Hurt Locker.

I’m guessing because of the CIA-apologia in Zero Dark Thirty?

A Directors Guild of America analysis of 220 television shows consisting of 3,500 episodes broadcast in 2013 and 2014 found that 14 percent were directed by women. A third of all episodes had no female director at all.

This is worded strangely. Do you mean a third of all SERIES had no female directors at all, perhaps?

For anyone interested, there’s an awesome tumblr called Shit People Say to Women Directors that is definitely worth checking out. http://shitpeoplesaytowomendirectors.tumblr.com/

Reading it may will provoke some anti-patriarchy rage of the extreme variety.

I’m reminded of the very first episode of Mad Men when the secretaries were all trying out lipsticks for a company’s market testing. All the men watched Peggy sit and wait because she didn’t pick out a lipstick. One of the characters said (may be paraphrasing, this was a while ago), watching the wheels turn in her head, “It’s like watching a dog ride a bicycle”

As someone who has worked in the film industry and hopes to return, men simply DO NOT THINK WOMEN ARE CAPABLE.

It doesn’t even enter their fucking minds that a woman would have the clarity and scope of vision to direct a film, or write a thought-provoking screenplay, or be able to take charge of a large crew.

Then, when women are placed in positions that aren’t PA or other lower rung, men consistently undermine her authority, openly question and mock decision making, or shout you out of a room (like Aaron Sorkin). In terms of writing, Show runner Kurt Sutter even said that men are better at writing men. Well buddy, what happens is a unilateral, biased point of view that only skews to one side of the spectrum and your end result is self-aggrandizing, masturbatory, melodrama that everyone pats you on the back for before it airs and the rest of us are stuck with shitty TV and Films.

This study needed to happen like yesterday. Women have been organizing and trying and fighting for years, and god help you if you’re not white and “one of the boys”.

    About FUCKING time.

      Here’s the problem.

Major private equity players drive film financing.

They’re all chauvinists, so like when you deal with an Arab prince, you can’t bring him women to do business with, you fuck women, men do business.

I agree with wholly, just saying - it's not gonna change.

This will be interesting for sure! Misogyny is so deeply rooted that I’m not sure how much the government can do to change it. But even there’s a marginal improvement in the ratio, that might help chip away at views like “women can’t direct action” and BS like that.

That is the reason I support quotas. I know people hate quotas but I still think just having that role model can help a ton.

Yeah, while I don’t love the idea of quotas, I think it’s a good starting point as things just don’t seem to get better. And if that means a few shitty female directors get hired, well then there are plenty of shitty male directors who are making movies too.

But they do for rape, domestic violence, assault, driving under the influence..........

Um... The ACLU’s entire complaint is strangely worded and mathematically doesn’t make any sense.

Their math works out to women directing 1.9 movies. And 1/3 of episodes having no women directors at all is kinda the opposite of women not being allowed to direct...

If that’s the actual document they filed in court, I kinda see this getting tossed out the moment the judge reads it. I’m hoping those are just typos.

Yeah, it’s a bit confusing in the article. The letter makes it clear that they’re talking about a third of shows, not episodes: “A whopping 70 television shows (31%) had no women directing even a single episode in the 2013-2014 season.”

Hollywood gets a free pass for sexual harassment as a result of that Friends case, I wonder if they’ll try that “you’re hurting my creativity” defense here.
