  Dude bros and old assholes like my father who didn't straight up defend him but was kind of saying that women sometimes accuse men of things like that when they want to get back at them. He was telling me that when we went out to the restaurant together. He's such a shit.

  Your dad and thousands of others. The week that story broke was a hard one for my mental health. So much victim blaming, slut shaming, stereotyping and idiocy surrounding consent and BDSM... I lost a few friends that week.
  
  I also regularly had secret conversations with women who just couldn’t hold in their frustration, but also didn’t want to get skewered on social media for voicing their opinions publicly. I witnessed a few women openly embrace the label of feminist for the first time. As Canadian women, (white ones anyway)... we often seem to have things pretty damned good, our veneer of equality is a strong one. This showed that Canada is not at all immune to sexist attitudes and gendered violence.

I’m glad he’s finally going to trial, I’m also glad it’s just in front of a judge.

When this first broke, I was working in radio and this is all we talked about for a week, and it brought up a lot of problems within our industry. A coworker and I were discussing an old boss we had had at a different station we worked at and what a perv he was - he was actually fired because of something he said to her during a conference call with all of our upper bosses. Our current boss was one of those men

After it all came to light, it became common knowledge that it had been an open secret in Toronto that Jian was a huge douche and pervert. Which makes me a little sad, because being Canada... the media is pretty incestuous and compared to the American media - you’d think it would be fairly well known, but the CBC did a good job keeping it as quite as they did for so long.

  I don’t even work in media, and still knew the rumours about him. Enough so that I warned a friend of mine who was about to become his intern on Q a couple years back. Seems most of my friends in the arts and cultural industries in Toronto all know at least one person he’s dated, and everyone has stories.

  I am very far removed from Toronto’s journalism scene, but I’d heard from two unrelated people about extreme sleaziness on his part. (Nothing approaching criminal, but well within workplace harassment sorts of things.) What befuddles me is that nobody in authority did a damn thing, not even out of conscience or morality but simply to limit their own liability.
  
  Then again, I’ve yet to hear of a massive suit against CBC management for failing to prevent exactly this, so maybe they found a way to cover themselves while keeping their golden goose, in which case, they’re opportunistic shits. Oh wait, I already said “Toronto” and “journalists” so that’s redundant, right?
