    Gawker reports on suicides?

I mean, the headline seemed to imply that maybe he was hung because Deep South + Black Man = Racist Murder. But there’s zero evidence for that whatsoever, so...

The article mentions there was no chair, ladder, etc. for him to climb on.

This particular post focuses on the statements by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations however, there was suspicion of foul play for weeks. From an earlier report:

Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas Sr. told The Associated Press earlier Friday that Byrd did not appear to have stepped off of anything in the area where he was found hanging from a tree limb about 12 feet high. His hands were not bound, Lucas said.

“It wasn’t no chair, no ladder,” Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas said, adding that it didn’t appear Byrd had stood on something or had been restrained.

ETA: Upon rereading the names in the link I posted above and those in this post, it seems this is another Black man that appeared suspiciously hanged. WTF?!

Part of me hopes this guy hung himself in Georgia ... being fully aware of the racial hornets nest he would be stirring. (the morbid satirical humor part)
The other part is wondering what evidence there is to suggest “no foul play”

This one is pretty easy really.

Pretend you are going to try to hang somebody without having them restrained. Imagine doing it without the victim showing any signs at all of a struggle. Nothing under his nails, clothes are clean, no bruising or scratching, no poison or high levels of alcohol/drugs, no blood, etc.

I doubt you could do it. And even if you could, why? I mean, if you want to hang a man in order to make a racist statement, you are effectively committing an act of terrorism. It doesn’t work if you make it look like a suicide.

Could you not remove the restraints after you’ve finished the hanging?

This happened yesterday; isn’t it a bit soon to rule out anything? I can’t imagine they did an entire investigation in one day.

ETA: they’re expecting autopsy reports this morning? JFC they’re not not even going to pretend to be thorough and careful.

How long do you think an autopsy takes?

They want to do it as soon as possible for obvious reasons. It’s standard to issue a preliminary diagnosis ASAP, usually within a couple days.

The press statement made by the GBI makes it very explicit that they haven’t ruled anything out, but merely don’t have any evidence of foul play at this time.

Too bad Sherman had absolutely no love for black people and only hated the South because they had the temerity to secede from the Union.

I can see some of the southerners have found their way here to remind us all that we’re reverse racists and incite violence. I’m just going to sit back and let this play out...

Isn’t it weird how suddenly the southern racists are much louder in the Gawker comments section than they used to be? It’s almost like... no, that couldn’t be, could it? Gawker wouldn’t be purposely promoting trolls around here, would they?

This isn’t the first black man to be found hanging from a tree down in the South. In March, an African-American man was found hanging from a tree in Mississippi with bedsheets around his neck attached to a limb about 15 feet high. Police are still investigating that one... all this strange fruit seems a little more than just strange, to me, anyway.

I don’t know, it could be like that census worker who elaborately staged his suicide to make it look like he had been killed by an anti-government nutjob.

I think without more information, I’m agnostic on all possibilities right now as it would be demonstrably false to say that black people didn’t commit suicide through hanging (they do).

I just saw a Discovery Channel show that covered that story. I remember when it first came out and morons online wanted Michelle Bachmann charged with his murder because she said mean things about the census.

      Um, so...fair play?

“Nothing to see here folks. Just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill black man hanging from a tree. Same thing you’d see anywhere else in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi...all the progressive states.”

Also, might I point out, this did not happen in Florida.

I can’t tell if you’re praising Florida or mocking it but yeah, I would completely expect a lynching to happen in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Hanging from a tree, and from the stories I recall there was nothing for him to stand on found nearby.

      No foul play my ass.
