It takes a manly man to cry . It takes an even manlier man to cry while covered in tiny tiny kittens* so you should get some kittens just in case.

*I assume this man is crying, because kitten claws on bare skin.

I have never claimed to be a man’s man, but regardless, cat stories will always bring the salt to my eyes.

I’m just going to add that people who abandon (better word is dump) animals instead of taking them to a rescue or shelter are both lazy and shitty. Gah!

Years ago I was moving into a house that had a lovely 5 acre wooded lot. It was an unusually warm autumn, so I left the windows open when I went to bed. I woke with a start because I could hear this really weird and loud crying. My dog was losing his mind, so I decided to get up and investigate. It was too dark and I couldn’t pinpoint where the sound was coming from, so I went back to bed.

In the morning I went back out, but couldn’t hear the crying anymore. I searched the area I thought I heard it in and found (STOP here if you’re easily upset...or you know, have a heart) a tiny kitten curled up with it’s dead brother or sister. I found another dead kitten a few feet away. I scooped up the kitten that was still alive and took her back to the house. She was too weak to argue much.

I had no clue what to do, so I filled an old dog crate with blankets and got her some water and mixed up some tuna with dog food (don’t laugh, she ate it). I called animal control (this was a ruralish area and they were super awesome) to see if they could come out and help me find any more live kittens. None. He mentioned they’d been getting a lot of calls for stuff like this from surrounding farms and private homeowners since the McMansion neighborhood went up. No surprises there.

Anyway, a local rescue came and took the dog food eating kitten and found a nice forever home for her. Stuff like this makes me want to punch things.

I came by a kitty and a pup thanks to jerks who abandon/otherwise give zero shits about tiny kitties/puppies.
My Meow-Meow was found by the side of the road with a broken jaw, she was probably 9 weeks old but so malnourished and sickly it was hard to tell. Some kind soul found her and brought her into the vet where my ex’s cousin worked. It was rather touch and go, his cousin didn’t know if the kitty would survive, but she did and joined our household. We already had one rescue pup (her owners had at least taken the litter into a no-kill shelter to be adopted) and they became fast friends.
About two months later we got a call from my ex’s cousin again. One of her vet clients (who’d she’d repeatedly asked to have their dog spayed) came in with a very pregnant dog. They wanted nothing to do with a litter of impending puppies. So his cousin said she’d look after the dog and find suitable homes for the puppies once they were old enough. So 10(!) healthy puppies later, the family wants the dog back. The problem: puppies are only 6 weeks old and not ready to leave mom. Too bad, according to horrible dog owner, they’re going on vacation and want to take the dog and if they don’t have her back they’ll sue and take the vet for all she’s worth and other such nonsense. So the puppies were bottle fed for another two weeks, something my ex and I volunteered to do and in doing so, fell in love with the second smallest. He was the sweetest thing ever. After getting a clean bill of health, we had him meet our other two fur kids and they had a blast. Needless to say, he came home with us permanently. The other puppies were also adopted out and a few of us lived near enough to each other so that we could arrange play dates for the siblings. I always wondered what came of his mom, she was so attentive and patient with such a large litter, it pisses me off to think of her “family” taking her away from the pups so soon.

Oh no :’( this reminds me of when we lived in China, there were lots of kittens on campus. I found a very ill one but I didn’t know what to do and she died :( that was five years ago and I still cry about her sometimes. I feel so bad I couldn’t save her. <3

Yay for you saving that little baby <3

A wild rabbit made 5 smaller rabbits in my backyard today!

I saw it lying on my patio looking kinda sickly. I couldn’t tell if it was dying or sunning itself. But it looked at me like it was going to use whatever it had left to flee if I approached, so I left it be. A few hours later I looked outside and she was up and about with 5 chipmunk sized rabbits in tow! Later they were nursing under the (just appeared for the year) flowers along my fence. It was seriously like the springest moment that spring has ever imagined springing, but then decided, “nah, that’s just too springy”.

I have no idea what to do. The reason I noticed them is that my backyard is mainly my dog’s toilet, and I was going to let her out. I’m pretty sure momma has been bedding down under my chimney for a few seasons, and successfully evading my dog. But I’m worried about letting my dog out with the babies back there. I intend to go out with her to call her off if needed, but letting her out is kind of an auto-pilot action at this point, especially in the morning.

If the bunny/bunny family has lived there a few years then she/her relatives probably had other babies that both you and your dog didn’t notice.
