Right hand Ellen... Chain Like DegeneresHamilton Nolan

THANK YOU! I have never in my life have come across an ad video that I actually wanted to watch. Thanks to uBlock and AdBlock I can defeat those but there are times when I’m forced to sit through a 1 minute long ad and I think to myself “Why? Who is this directed at? Do they actually believe if they annoy enough people with ad videos on the internet, they’ll gain a customer?”

Better to watch a one minute ad and get content for free than be nickel and dimed for everything, no?

But Video Advertising is how america Learns about New Things.

My fave is clicking on a News Article, only to find video of some suit reading the article to me. If it has a douche in a newsroom in it, it can fuck right off.

Huffington Post has gotten terrible about this. And said video auto-starts, which is infinitely MORE annoying.

When I completed the seven trials in the Halls of Zarmud to obtain my advertising crystal, there was a moment, after I had to pluck the Heat Ruby from the skull of Thrax, the monkey king, when I wondered whether this was the right career choice. Now, evidence on blogs from blog men makes it clear to me that I should have never taken the cascade path towards the city of lies.

What I try do not get is how many ads to not even try to capture the audience’s attention in the first 5 seconds. Why do companies try to go sentimental on Youtube ads that are 3 minutes long, start with 15 seconds of music or some general introduction.

That was the brilliance of Geico’s recent ads. “You could skip this Geico ad, but it’s already over.” Perfect! I heard Geico, the ad is over, and that’s all there is too it.

You have 5 seconds to capture my attention. Maybe 10. Why are you wasting it with bullshit, people?

To be fair though, that Poo-pouri ad is mesmerizing. I find myself watching the whole thing every. damn. time.

Excellent — now Gawker can get rid of those uncloseable pop-up video ads that none of us watch, right?

I’ve never seen one of those. Maybe my adblocker’s catching them.

I can’t even remember what the ads are. Alcohol? Cars, or something? All I do is stare at the countdown to skip as fast as possible.

There’s ads on the internet? No, I think you’re wrong about that. Never seen ‘em.*

Pre-roll videos are usually bi-products of of standard production. A studio will usually just throw these in or charge a nominal fee because you’re shooting a tv format commercial (clarifying that there is rarely if ever some enormous costs to make these). Anyway, just saying that ad execs end up with this crap laying around, and figure “why not just annoy everyone with it?”

I want to know who thought it was a good idea to make those 10 minute+ ads that I see occasionally. I’m just watching the countdown from before I can skip it anyway.

If you haven’t told me what your product is within the first 5 seconds, congrats! You have produced something as useless as a banner ad.

The worst are the ones like on IBT that are autoplay WITH SOUND. Burn them down. Burn them all down.

Speaking of video ads, you know that one that pops up on Gawker articles with the kids and the painted card board box? I have seen it 1000 times and still have no idea what it’s advertising. I’ve never seen more than what happens after the five-second skip delay.

Plus it’s annoying that - at least on Chrome - if you scroll down a ways on the page, then the video ad pops up, once you click “skip ad” it throws you right back up to the top of the page.
