    We need actual screening & a throrough psych eval before we give these guys a badge. Hiring Cousin Merle & Uncle Geech because they're too pissed off & unstable to get into the army isn't helping anyone. It's making a sham of our justice system. These guys are just bullies who get off on any amount of authority.

      They should have to undergo the very thorough and much dreaded obstacle course that people with higher level security clearances have to go through. It’s brutal and does a pretty good job of weeding out the rejects. Better yet, it’s not a one time deal. Reinvestigations are required at set intervals.

      There’s a very serious move in Virginia now to strip them of their law enforcement powers and make them the simple regulatory agency they should be. I can’t wait for the “Will anyone think about the children?!?” idiots to come out in force against it, though.

    My husband has always maintained that the various types of law enforcement professions self-select for a particular type of individual; that is, people who are prone to seeing the world in a hierarchical arrangement in which their position is inherently and justly higher than that of criminals/suspects/perpetrators, and who are prone to violence are going to be people who want to be cops. Cuz they get to live out their power trip fantasy all day long. I think there are more moving parts to the problem of over-policing and brutalization of young black men by cops in this country, but I think Husband is right on that part of it.

      I totally agree with all you said except for the power trip fantasy. I come from a cop family and whatnot, etc... and they really do not start out with that at all. It’s more a sense that they want to belong to a group, they internalize a us vs they mentality early on and receive reinforcement for that as they progress in their career. I think the powertrip thing might happen a lot later in the career though.
