Using gravy to hide the stench... Yes, I like this. Will no longer be buying Lady Speedstick.

For real ya’ll, the school district I work for (in one of the poorest areas in the nation) now has a farm and school gardens. The lunch menu includes quinoa, swiss chard, kale, fresh berries, and all manner of deliciousness. Where the hell was this when I was in the free school lunch program? By ‘this’ I clearly do not mean all the aged and neglected meat.

I also work in a high poverty district, and we are getting a similar program. Our kids deserve healthy food.

The only bummer is that the school has to be completely remodeled to create a new kitchen, which is costing a bazillion dollars. Healthy food is important, but right now there is a shortage of a lot of basic things that other schools take for granted, like office supplies and curriculum materials. The district budget is a mess.

It’s an old school, and at some point it had a real kitchen which was torn out, because it wasn’t needed after they started serving packaged, processed crap. Now they want to serve real food, so they need a new kitchen. No one can agree on the kitchen design, so they are going to hash it out. How much do you want to bet that the new kitchen doesn’t open for five years?

It’s kind of like when the district put in a new library, even though there is a public library next door to the school. The school can’t afford to run the library, so it’s mostly a space for tutoring. The whole thing is kind of stupid.

I think our organic garden/learning center project is a bunch of public relations bullshit. The district wants people to think we are more like Berkeley.

I may be just a tad cynical.

Justifiably cynical. That’s some massive mission drift there. It’s frustrating to see such great potential for growth and meaningful change squandered so that the school can look good on paper.

Anyone who’s ever been part of the free lunch program is not even remotely surprised by this.

I remember our cafeteria gave us some meat patties, and inside one I had was some small, round, clear gelatin thing. it was bizarre but since we couldn't afford to eat out every day, I just continued to eat school food.

This is from near me and it’s bullshit and horrifying. Apparently they pulled the meat on a Friday and let it thaw Saturday and Sunday, then cooked it Monday and let it sit until Wednesday before serving it. The local news stations post each day and so far there hasn't been a resolution or anyone willing to cop to this mess.

Wow. So doesn’t matter how old the meat was, that’s just really bad food handling. I’m amazed nobody has been sick long before now if that’s how they do things.

I agree. I think it was a combination of old meat and really godawful handling procedures. I don’t know if the article mentioned or not but they found the old meat in all of the local schools. It makes me angry because for some kids, that may be the only meal they get and it’s just not right to feed kids, or anyone, food like that.

i can’t be the only kid who grew up with parents who had a chest freezer & RARELY cleaned it out... when they did some reshuffling I guarantee I ate meat at least this old. AND I AM STRONG LIKE OX.

Seriously laughing. Hard. Strong like ox indeed!

My grandparents had that kind of freezer, along with a standing one. But I do have to give my gramma credit, because she was the one to teach me “when in doubt, throw it out” and that has served me very well!

If it had been frozen all that time, it shouldn’t have spoiled. Turned into a disgusting pile of freezer-burned cardboard, yes, but not obviously decomposing. Besides using expired food, they must have serious sanitation problems in that kitchen. I wouldn’t trust even fresh food under those circumstances.

After that much time, whatever fat the meat had was certainly oxidized. (aka rancid) Rancid fat isn’t harmful per se, just has an odor that makes you want to vomit.

Your Wikipedia-fu has validated my decision to throw out any frozen stuff I find in the fridge that I can’t remember when I bought. Not gonna wait to find out if it stinks.

This reminds me (uncomfortably) that I served a rump roast a few weeks ago. I made it in a crock pot and hand-pulled the meat away and served it over rice. So basically I have fed my friends Hand Shredded Ass Meat.

Rump roast actually comes from the shoulder of the back leg. Close, but not quite the ass.

It was probably tastier and more nutritious than the food that was served in college dining halls during the 1970s. The USDA didn’t even have a grade for the mystery meat that showed up on the menu.
