I keep trying to explain this bizarro existence I’m in in which every thing a black person does is further denigrated by our blackness. I can’t just be a thief or robber, I’m a thug. I can’t just be ill-kempt and dysfunctional, I’m ghetto and ratchet. It’s like this country has truly welded the connotation of blackness to depravity that — hell, the very word: “denigrate” means “to blacken”! — that folks cannot fucking SEE that we SEE how much you need a word for “being irritating while black”. That word is nigger. And even if you say “thug” or “urban” or “you people”, muhfuckas, we hear what you are really saying. We cannot do ANYthing untoward while black without our blackness somehow, in some way, being the base reason for what we do. And that knowledge affects every part of my day while I interact with coworkers, teach students or fuck my white husband and take care of my house. I could go into dual consciousness and cultural studies shit in detail, but I’m pissed right now. tl;dr: just say nigger, trick.

As a black woman reading this I almost shed a tear but I’m all tapped out. My pure existence is a blight. I’m just a nigger doing nigger shit.

I’ll bite - what would be your preference for the word used to identify the fine people we see appearing to commit crimes on our television sets?

My parents use this word in reference to two things: criminals and black music. That’s not a coincidence. They don’t consider themselves racists, and I don’t believe they are trying to be, but they’re perpetuating a language of oppression, and they refuse to see it.

My Grandpa, a white farmer who’s lived his whole life in the ultra-Deep South, once expressed to me his intention to vote for Barack Obama. “Maybe it’s time we give that n****r a chance,” he told me.

Racism is dreadfully slow to change, but language can be even slower. The “thug” references are absolutely unhelpful, but like all words, “thug” can be used with various connotations. Members of the press should be at the spearhead of removing this word from our collective lexicon, particularly when associated with young black men.

In what context though? He said that it was wrong to do. The article title makes it sound like he said it maliciously. Click bait at its finest. “Just call them niggers, just call them niggers, NO WE DO NOT HAVE TO CALL THEM SUCH NAMES AS THAT”

Agree. And Erin Burnett calling her son a thug is completely irrelevant. Thug is not a racial slur for privileged white boys.

YES. I’m glad this is gaining traction. If you’re talking about all these young black men being “thugs,” what you really mean is niggers. It’s what you fucking mean.

And we know this in part because you’re talking about ALL the protesters, and not JUST the ones doing criminal acts. And we know this because you’re NOT calling the kids from Ohio State or the surf riots thugs.

FUCK THIS CODE WORD BULLSHIT. WE ALL KNOW YOU’RE BEING A RACIST PIECE OF SHIT, SO GROW SOME BALLS AND OWN IT.

    Spoiler alert:

Burnett would NOT call her son a thug if he behaved like this, and neither would anyone else in the media.

I could actually hear the wind whistling between her ears when she tried to come up with some kind of response to Stokes’ amazing outburst. It’s almost like she thought she was staring down some kind of enraged, wild beast: “Don’t show fear! DOUBLE DOWN OR LOSE ALL CREDIBILITY WITH VIEWERS.”

Which is a shame. That could have been a really interesting segment.

Hell, she could have even said “No I wouldn’t because he’s my son”...and she wouldn’t have looked like quite an ass.

It wasn't when I was a kid, but new dog whistles get added to the list all the time. Google "thug" or "white thug" or "black thug" and it will bring up a whole lot of racist white sites gleefully instigating and black sites angrily reacting. I guess Thug is the new Black.

Forget the nasal-voiced instigator; what is going on on the right side of the screen while she’s bitching? Are they doing a dance routine? I’d much rather see that!

They’ve been focused on the dancing and parading this evening. It has been organized by the community to quell the violence and anger.
