Renner told Entertainment Weekly that “it was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”

Just a coupla boys letting off some steam via misogyny, what’s the big deal?

This only furthers my belief that Jeremy Renner is really and truly an asshole.

Evans, at least, managed an actual apology. Tip for Renner: “just blowing off steam” is not the same as “I screwed up and I’m sorry.”

Tony Stark was a WAY bigger slut than Natasha Romanoff.

Are we really giving this much press to a fucking joke about a fictional person?

It was a dumb attempt at being funny, but I’ll never get how this is being labelled misogyny.

They are obviously joking and answering a question about shipping psuedo in character (but not really). If anything, this comes across like making fun of people who can’t get over being jilted. Perhaps they shouldn’t have said it, but after watching the video, I fail to see any major aggressions.

I feel like a lot of the outrage comes from people not watching the video

yeah, like on surface before watching the video i get why people are pissed by the language.

but in context, its come across much less harsh

If the Marvel movies and merch had better female representation, this probably would have been a non-issue—two tired and punchy actors who said something stupid without thinking. But since it happened the same day as the news that Black Widow has been left off of nearly all the movie merch (and the issue of female characters being left out in general has been in the news as well), their dumb comments ended up carrying a lot more weight.

okay i’m admittedly biased here (we all know my love for chris evans runs really deep), but i feel like the outrage for the whole thing is disproportionate. Yes, it was a dumb-ass thing to say. It was a juvenile answer to a fucking dumb-ass question. i mean really. what is even a real answer to that question?

also, this on a whole different level, but why does she need to be paired up with anyone in the first place? like heaven forbid she not bone someone because she’s the one girl and girls always be wantin’ a man. i love joss wheadon but he always falls into this trope

Both Buffy and Faith were pretty man free by the end of the series. Buffy had really gone away from trying to make it work with romance, focusing on Dawn and being a slayer instead (an idea which they continue to reinforce in the comics). And sure, Faith was hooking up with Robin Wood, but she was very adamant about letting him know “it is what it is” and keeping her boundaries.

I haven’t watch much of Angel or Dollhouse though, so I don’t know how he handled that. And Firefly...eh, I won’t go there lest the whole internet hate me.

I feel like I'm falling into two camps here. Like, honestly the outrage over it feels kind of... Manufactured. It's like people heard it and were like "Oh, here's something we can be pissed off about." Like a dumb joke in an interview doesn't deserve nearly this much attention.

HOWEVER, it definitely raises a point about MCU. She's being called a slut for basically interacting with dudes only, but who the fuck else is she gonna interact with? All the other women that they've put on the Avengers team? All 0 of them? Guh. I think Marvel themselves are a much bigger problem than Renner and Evans, who essentially seem to be pretty harmless frat bros.

Peggy Carter will not tolerate your misogyny.

Seriously though, I am at least glad Evans sincerely apologized. Captain America is one of my favorites, partially because he has a history of fighting against social inequality, and I’d hate to look at him and see someone who unabashedly slut-shames his colleagues. How’d Jeremy Renner respond?

Renner’s “apology” was in the vein of “I’m sorry if you were offended it was just a joke”. Not good.

Eh, well, he was always one of the weaker actors, and Hawkeye’s easily the least interesting Avenger (as seen in the MCU, not the comics), so who really cares what his opinion is. The most interesting thing about his character was his relationship with Black Widow, so if he doesn’t respect her, fuck him.

Maybe he’s bitter about the Hawkeye Project. If so, we should make more pictures for the Hawkeye Project.

              • Wait, can we keep talking about this Tom Hardy thing? Because this is a real quote: “I have a problem with killing—otherwise I’d be doing it. I have a fundamental issue with killing something. I can’t do it. I’ve tried, trust me. It’s not easy.”

This was totally a tale of two apologies: 1) Evans apologized for being offensive while 2) Renner apologized that you were offended by something that wasn’t meant to be offensive, why are you so sensitive, can’t you see that we were just joking around, jesus.

Yes. I get a lot of heat from people (men and women) who get frustrated and offended when I point out the existence and unacceptability of these kinds of bullshit sexist comments (“Gawd, it’s just a joke, can’t you lighten up??”). And I always say, “Look, I’m not asking for perfection. Our society is screwed up, and we all - even me - make these mistakes sometimes. All I’m asking for is that we recognize it when it happens, and then take genuine responsibility for it.” Evans did that. Renner did not. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t even care (that much) about the joke. It’s the non-apology that makes me mad, because it reveals just how much he doesn’t understand the issue. And THAT’s the heart of the problem.

Renner’s non-apology was worse than the offending comments. Evans’ was gracious and appropriate.

Tom Hardy is a beautiful weirdo. If you haven’t seen his old myspace photos, do it now:

Posted the same in the greys. It was a textbook example for how to properly apologize and non-apologize to the same offense.

1.) Give Blue Ivy a reality show and cancel Patti Stanger. I think Blue Ivy would be a lot more open to short/pale/red-headed/curly-haired women and would not shame them as Patti does.

2.) You can murder me anytime, Tom......in the bedroom.
