Miller himself has also been an open proponent of GMOs.

Um, what’s wrong with that? Oh yeah, pseudoscience says GMOs = bad, I forgot.

Exactly! I mean, I’m skeptical about current GMOs, but that skepticism comes from not trusting Monsanto, not because of the science.

I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with it, but it certainly gives Oz an opening for debate/room to poke holes in some of his arguments.

I’ve heard a lot of buzz around Dr. Oz being a quack. I don’t watch his show but my mom does. What are some of the things he’s said/done that have raised some red flags?

For starters, he shills for green coffee extract and raspberry ketones for weight loss.

Oz is the Oprah of supplements. I used to shill holistic health type products in a health food store. Without a doubt, if he recommended an unfounded alternative remedy, we’d sell out in a day and be flooded with back orders.

My former boyfriend and a lot of my friends did as well, and this was pretty much the same experience they had. They hated Dr Oz.

One of my friends said she was going to stab the next person who asked her for raspberry ketones when that was big. I would never have made it in one of those jobs. I would’ve been fired for trying to teach people actual science.

The only surprising thing here is that there weren’t more legit docs signing this thing. And that he holds any kind of position at a university. And that he still has a TV show after that congressional hearing where he had to admit that he was a liar and a quack. Actually there is a lot of surprising stuff.

I’m not surprised at that, when you see the numbers for how few physicians get disciplined even when they’ve really messed up. It’s really hard for professionals to not give each other the benefit of the doubt.

But that IS the refutation of the claims. That these men are untrustworthy—-as found by medical licensing boards and law enforcement—-and thus should not be trusted in this instance.

It was incredibly stupid of these men to try this given their pasts. If they were serious about bringing Dr. Oz down they would have worked hard to find “untainted” spokespeople for their movement (like doctors who have not been incarcerated for Medicare fraud). There is clearly something odd going on with their “initiative,” that or they think that people don’t know how to use Google to do even cursory research on people trying to get a big-name professor kicked off the faculty of a big name medical school...

Something is off with this whole thing.

To refute a claim, you have to talk about what was claimed, and how it was wrong. So no, talking about how the people who made the claim are untrustworthy does not refute the claim. Discredit the claim != refute the claim.

What this sounds like to me is a few doctors legitimate concerns mixed with a couple of other doctor’s sour grapes. Dr. Oz does push BS solutions for profit on his show, so that’s a legit concern. Going after his spot at the University because of it is overkill, which sounds like it is being pushed by the two doctors that are themselves receiving money supporting controversial opinions. Those two doctors know that if they could get the kind of backing that Dr, Oz has, they would be doing the exact same thing he’s doing, if not worse.

This is going to get incredibly messy before it’s all over and done with.
