I hate to pile on, but I'm afraid this time I have to agree with the emerging consensus that this is one seriously poorly written piece; it took me at least a couple of times through to even get a sense of who the people were, and then another to try and piece together exactly what had happened - and it's not even that unusual (except possibly for its duration) custody-battle story.

And the headline and narrative made it sound like Mary was kidnapped by a stranger and randomly just showed the hell up, and not actually living with her family the whole time. Sheesh.

Does she corroborate the sexual abuse??????????

If so, I don't blame the mother at all.. the things we will do to protect our children from abuse defies logic EVERY day. Even to the point of wrongdoing.

Need to know whether the accusations were substantiated by the (victim)!!

I don't know if you can believe the victim. After all, she's been aware for the last ten years her mother and stepfather were willing to go to prison for her. That is a powerful subliminal factor on memory.

She was 8 when they moved. If she was 5, then I'd be like.. eh, she may not believable but at 8, you can easily recall a lot of memories. I do recognize that children can be influenced to recall memories certain ways, but again, she was 8. If she was abused I hope it comes out bc her parents risked SO much and changed their lives so drastically to protect her.

This is seriously the worst writing I've ever seen on Gawker. And that's saying a lot.

If I honestly believed my kid had been and would continue being molested by a custodial guardian, I'd run too. Interested to hear what details come out of these trials.

The waters may be a bit murky on this one.

Pulled from the CNN article linked in this story:

Wayne Rioux, who was then the police chief of Whitefield, New Hampshire, told "The Hunt" that a video Genevieve and Scott Kelley made, intended to prove their abuse allegations, aroused his suspicions.

Rioux watched the tape for "any evidence of wrongdoing by Mark Nunes."

"But throughout the tape all I saw was this bizarre, strange conduct by the mother," Rioux said, "who was absolutely brainwashing the daughter and trying to get the daughter to say things against her daddy."

I finally understood (I think) this story after rereading it three times. Guess I'll click the linked article to be sure.

Those commenting on your story are constructing a better narrative than you, the author of the piece. Is this something we want to happen in 2015?
