Seconded. As a career with limited job opportunities, and one that many do out of passion and a sense of vocation (even for writing gossip and lols) journalists are ripe for exploitation by media companies. There's no reason though that their rights at work shouldn't be collectively represented and protected. Good for you guys.

    Top demanded items by site:

Gawker - More journalistic freedom to write about how Sponsor X's main product is actually ground up people.

Jalopnik - Elevator buttons to be replaced by an overly complicated stick-shift system.

Gizmodo - An Occulus rig for the breakroom

IO9 - Other departments no longer allowed to play with the action figures on our desks.

Deadspin - The sexual harassment handbook will include an exception for dick jokes.

Jezebel - Veto power over all Deadspin requests.

Kotaku - Actually, we'd just like support the Giz team on this one.

Sploid - To be included on this list like they are a real site and not a bunch of gifs of things exploding.

I love how all the Gawker sites form one giant sitcom family.

      Gawker — Tell-it-like-it-is mom
      Jalopnik — Always-in-the-garage dad
      Gizmodo — Out-there uncle
      io9 — Mischievous youngest child
      Deadspin — Jock-ish, jokey son
      Jezebel — Outspoken, rebellious daughter
      Kotaku — Dorky other kid
Sploid — A piece of shit the dog left in the yard

Foxtrot Alpha - quarterly team building events where they get to blow stuff up.

Truck Yeah! - Same as Foxtrot Alpha, but with more canned beer.

Code 3 - conduct a Search and Rescue mission for someone to write content.

Good luck to you in your efforts. I wish I were reading more articles about workers unionizing across the country. Unions are the reason this country had a middle class, and their decline is the reason the middle class is rapidly disappearing.

Don't forget how the unions helped the US auto sector nail those Japanese to the cross back in the day. Oh wait, forget that. I meant, don't forget how the police unions have helped breakdown the blue wall of silence. Oh wait. Umm. When the public sector 60 year-old union guy's job was to create a batch of cards once a day that took all of 15 minutes. The rest of the day was spent reading paperbacks. Maybe not a good example. The time negotiations broke down leading to a strike because the fuckers wouldn't give us an 11 minute coffee break and were only offering 10? That never got in the news of course, high stakes negotiations after all.

If they are successful, hopefully these knuckleheads will figure out how to keep it real.

Good luck! Management will always put their interests first—it's not always malicious, it's just human nature. It's good to have unions as a counterbalance to that, as individual workers just can never have a loud enough voice.

Since I'm currently neck deep in a book on this very subject (Our Political Nature) I thought I'd jump in. Liberals tend to view the world as co-operative and conservatives as competitive. I'm by no means casting any dispersions on your character, but with a comment like "Management will always put their interests first...it's just human nature", I wonder if you consider yourself right of the aisle? Because that is a very conservative viewpoint. The alternate viewpoint, of course, is that we are a co-operative species and it is not necessarily just human nature to put our own interests first. Sometimes (many times even) the interest of the group is put before the interest of the individual. That being said...not here to start a war, just found the comment interesting in the context of the book I'm reading. Sadly, many of us have experienced management putting their interests above their workers so your statement does reflect an all-too-common reality. There's room for both co-operation and competitiveness in human nature. That's probably why competitive sports isn't the domain of any particular political party. Do conservatives favor golf though? Not much co-operation there. Now I'm rambling. Good day!

Companies exist to make money for their owners/shareholders. It's nice when they take worker welfare into account if it benefits them, a' la Henry Ford boosting his employees' pay so they can buy Fords, but it's not what they are there for.

And let's not get started on municipal unions, which are bleeding cities dry and should be banned.

Fantastic. I wish more white collar industries would unionize. Disparity in pay is likely most prevalent among low- and mid-level professionals in white collar jobs. There is very little that regulates hours or pay. Good luck to you!

It's not easy to do, but because he's able to write this publicly, it might be for him. I tried to unionize a small private school I worked at ten years ago. The headmistress was a Dolores Umbridge type and I would have succeeded if a) she hadn't hired so many undocumented workers as aides under the table who couldn't get involved and b) if she hadn't gotten whiff of it in the early stages and fired me the day before Christmas. I was so looking forward to seeing her face when it happened. Life is unfair, I tell ya Graby.

Every workplace could use a union.

Absolutely. There is no facet of labor that couldn't do without a collective voice, even if that voice is acknowledging that their place of employment is pretty good.

Yes! A union organizer pointed out to me years ago that often when workers organize these days, it's because they care about the company/organization and want it to improve.
