OMG yes. Pine pellets for them to slip on or bruise the bottoms of their feet if they were foolish enough to take off their shoes. Clay dust to track them from the scene of the crime.

Bonus: stray turds from the cat box that can stick to their burglar bag and later be identified via DNA.

A housecat is not a guard animal.

That’s what tigers are for. I guarantee you the moment a thief sees one of those looking straight at him, he’s going back out that window and closing it behind him.

Certain cats are trained...err that is prone to avoid being filmed, for completely innocuous and not nefarious purposes.

Yes it was a burglar. Definitely a burglar who stole her stuff. The cat definitely did not steal the stuff and learn how to film and edit a fake human into the video. DEFINITELY A BURGLAR.

We have a dropcam in our living room. I've definitely talked to my cat through it.

Copy and pasting my reply to the OP, since it’s about the Dropcam:

My husband and I have a Dropcam. It was $150 and we have the option to pay $10 a month to have a 7-day archive on cloud storage. It can send you notifications when there is movement or noise on camera, and you can view the livestream on your phone. AND you can talk to your cats through the microphone built into the camera. (It’s free to see the livestream and get notifications and not have the 7-day archive, btw.) Totes cheaper than a security company, so when you’re in a neighborhood primed for break-ins and you’re on a budget, it’s a good compromise for home security.

Fact: Jack would run away, Fintan would run up and want pets. My cats would be useless. The Morning Dove that is nesting in our porch light would be better at fighting off a burglar (not really).

Yeah this. My cat would hide. Unless it was a woman burglar then he would kiss her repeatedly. But my bird would chirp frantically.

My cockatiel would shrilly shriek repeatedly until blood ran out the burglar’s ears.

        Oh, the noise...

We were robbed a little over a year ago, and just being present was hands down the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to our cat. She managed to unbutton our duvet cover so she could climb inside the duvet, and stayed there for at least eight hours just to be safe, even after my husband and later I came home and tried to comfort her.

Our robber was caught on the security cameras of the shop on the ground floor of our bulding, but it still didn’t do any good...the footage was too grainy to get a good look at the guy. Hope the cat camera works out better for her!

This is why you adopt a feral. A hand-raised cat with the soft kitten-paws of a life indoors does not have the tiger heart to maul a grown ass man. A giant orange 20 lb 20 year old tomcat with a notched ear and one eye will make that man drop your jewelry, raid your first-aid kit, and call 911 on himself just to get the amber lamps. Downside: You will be out $200 to steam-clean the blood out of the carpet. Also you will be feeding that tomcat steak for a week.
