"There was a knock at the door. Cheryl opened it and Albert and Bernard stood there smiling. 'Happy Birthday!' they said in unison. 'One of us has a ribbon tied around his dick. Can you guess which one?' Cheryl hesitated. 'Do I get a clue?' she asked. ..."

Answer Below for those curious/don't care:

Ill refer as "Person A and Person B"

    May 15 — May 16 — May 19

    June 17 — June 18

    July 14 — July 16

    August 14 — August 15 — August 17

Albert: I don’t know when your birthday is, but I know Bernard doesn’t know, either.

Since, B can't know, the day must not be unique. We strike off May and June (because of 19 and 18)

    May 15 — May 16 — May 19

    June 17 — June 18

    July 14 — July 16

    August 14 — August 15 — August 17

Bernard: I didn’t know originally, but now I do.

B knows now, so the day must be exclusive to the remaining. the 14s are gone

    May 15 — May 16 — May 19

    June 17 — June 18

    July 14 — July 16

    August 14 — August 15 — August 17

Albert: Well, now I know, too!

So the correct answer must be the only one that remains on A's month. Eliminating August which has 2 remaining.

    May 15 — May 16 — May 19

    June 17 — June 18

    July 14 — July 16

    August 14 — August 15 — August 17

Answer: Birthday is July 16 th

But why do you get rid of May. He only knows the month and knows it can't be May 19th (June makes sense because June 18 is gone and there is one left). He only knows the month and it has to be one of those.

We did spend a good 30 minutes on this today at work and finally figured it out. 15 of those minutes were spent trying to understand the broken English.

Why do they bother to make the textbook in English and not have it edited by natural speakers? Its probably some "English language as prestige" thing I don't get.

Why is May completely eliminated? If Albert says Bernard doesn't know the answer, then that just eliminates the two single days, May 19th and June 18th. By Bernard saying he now knows the answer, it tells us that he figured it out by having those two days eliminated, meaning the only way that Albert could know that it wasn't one of those two days is because he knew it was in August.

Since August is the only month now, and Bernard knew it was the correct month by crossing June off the list, this means it has to be August 17th.

Albert knows the month, and thus knows the correct month doesn't have a unique day in it. That eliminates all of May and June.

The now-widespread "BOY THAT ENGLISH SURE IS BAD" shit is tiresome. The language was clear enough to understand the logical framework of the puzzle, which is the most important thing, because it's a logic puzzle, not a fucking novella. If you couldn't decipher the not-at-all-inscrutable phrasing, then you likely couldn't deduce the not-at-all-inscrutable solution, either.

While I'll agree that the response, and the tepid swamps of cultural superiority from which its ilk typically emerges, is tired, I disagree with your dismissal of the value of clarity. As a Rhetoritician of modest repute, myself, my mind can't help but wander the myriad wild rails that imprecise and often incorrect language redirect the train of thought onto. I wish I could ignore the faintly suggested possibilities, I understand fully how much of a limitation it is to accept everyone's words fully, but I'm a slave to multiverse that is meaning. On a timed test, that little imprecision of design can derail the whole enterprise. I have the utmost sympathy for those who do the hard work of translation, but to say that the process does not yield difficulty for the reader is unduly dismissive of those who struggle to ascend to the pillar of ease from which you sneer at us.

I's actually suggest that a novella is a much easier place to tolerate the minor flaws of imprecise diction. There isn't the pressure of a test, and the final meaning isn't being presented as a single answer, leaving us more able to enjoy the process without wilting under the burning gaze of a proctor or, in this case, the entirety of the interwebbings.

I call these types of problems CBB (Can't Be Bothered). I get that some people are entertained by them and I used to really try because I wanted to understand but invariably, I go all "oh FFS, there's some mindless entertainment to be had at a gossip site". Also the same reason why IQ tests would have me classified as brain dead if I took one. I'd probably skip all but the easiest, dumbest questions.

I've taken a couple of those online IQ tests. I can deal with them for the most part, but there are some questions that ask to choose the next possible figure in a sequence and they're so convoluted that I give up. (I'm still classified as above average, so I'm guessing I could've been a genius if I gave a fuck.)

This was my exact reaction. Why does Cheryl have to make this into a problem rather than just telling them, damn it? Cheryl sucks and I hope she feels bad.
