The increasing legality of marijuana means one thing: Pot is very easy to buy and no longer cool to do. To fill this thrill-void, our country's idiots are turning to insane substances like krokodil, bath salts, jenkum, meow meow and now flakka, transforming into psychotic murder machines in the process. Or so local news would have us believe.

So the most recent Florida Flakka incident happened a few blocks from where I live. Mary Jane might be legal, cheap and easy to get elsewhere. But down here in the sunshine state it is not. In fact its expensive as hell and it is incredibly difficult to get. The area I live in used to be plagued by wandering pill heads. They were jokingly called zombies because they were so high on pills that they just shuffled up and down the street. And now that they have finally managed to get a handle on the pill mills these people are getting desperate. Now we have addicts wandering around with no way to get a fix, and as a consequence people are turning to cheaper stupider synthetic crap. There does not seem to be any kind of social safety net for these people. They are treated like nuisance criminals and they rarely get treatment for their addictions.

A ridiculous number of Floridians legitimately believe with a "reefer madness" level of extremism that marijuana is HORRIBLE and that we will all kill each other over it or something. They are even opposed to it from a medical stand point.

I have been shocked and horrified with the extent of painkiller addiction in florida, and the availability of pills here. My example: I twisted my ankle, went to the er, was given a scrip for something called "lortab" and told to take it every 4 hours for some number of days. I wasn't told this was a painkiller or an opiate. I never even asked for pain control, nor did they ask me my pain level. Luckily I was savvy enough to look up the drug before filling it. I think I took maybe 4 advil the whole time I was laid up. If the ER had their way I'd be a year into a painkiller addiction right now. Old people here trust doctors and have very little drug experience. They're sitting ducks for these drug companies.

      AND! And and!

No Medicaid expansion = no health insurance for able-bodied adults (we're talking about economically depressed, mentally ill, and homeless people here..) , don't forget...

I found this out the hard way as a former Florida addict who went through the system multiple times.... attempting to get clean (I was calling every state-run rehab every fucking day for months on end BEGGING FOR A BED) is damn impossible UNLESS you are arrested, jailed, and thrown in drug court. A bed magically opens up for you as they attempt to keep you out of state prison.

The answer I always got is "We haven't had a bed for a voluntary in over three years. Everyone here is court-ordered."

They grow wild. You clearly have internet. I'm not suggesting you look up your local area and find out what kind of Psilocybin mushrooms grow in your area, and then head out to a meadow in mushroom season to pick them at all.

Hang on. No wait. That's exactly what I am suggesting :)

There are a tonne of resources online. Happy hunting~!

With a drug like flakka, are their any "good" effects? I mean people obviously do it for a reason, but it just seems to make people go cuckoo-bananas and run around naked and terrified. Like, who has those aspirations? "Yeah, we're gonna get naked and terrified tonight...maybe run into traffic, get impaled on a fence...it's gonna get crazy!"

Those are most likely highly exaggerated effects. Its a stimulant, so it probably just has a lot of the things associated with that. Want to get hyphy? Sounds like a plan.

These drugs are stupid. Back in my college days (1996 - 2000) when we wanted to get good and twisted and go further than the effects of alcohol or weed we dropped, LSD or ate shrooms. Beyond that there was the occasional dose of mescaline and by my senior year MDMA was more popular and available. Now, of course a bad trip could catch someone off guard and ruin their time, but nothing like the effects of these designer synthetics, even if the reputation they have gained is somewhat overstated. The effects described above are why I never tried or had a desire to mess with PCP. Who wants to go crazy and rage out?

If you love your friends, family, children, etc. Steer them away from this garbage and directly towards good old LSD or shrooms.

A family member who spent the 1990s working as a paramedic on an ambulance swears that all the early-2010s "bath salts" stories are word-for-word repeats of mid-1990s PCP stories. He has expressed doubt that "bath salts" even exist except as a new name for PCP.

I give the men and women on squads a hell of a lot of credit. There is no possible way that they are properly compensated for what they have to do each and every day.

Had a friend that quit smokin crack for six years, he snorted the bath salts that were legal in Florida around 2010, and then within a week of using bath salts he was smokin crack daily again n still does

I do wish NOVA Science did a segment on this topic.

I need me a cabal of chemists, pharmacists and clinicians to explain it all in clear, concise terms. I need some animation that outlines the effects of these designer drugs on the brain and other organs in a non-snarky, non-judgy and non-panicky manner.

No gruesome photos or videos, please. Interviews with recovering addicts are fine, although please do not feature those who have significant brain/bodily damage. (I once saw a snippet of a Russian documentary about two teens who got so brain damaged from Krokodil that they could no longer speak properly and had all but lost the ability to walk upright or control their limbs. Horrible and traumatic for the viewer.)

I highly recommend the recent ep of Vice on HBO. They covered this while synthetic drug thing and how it was started by some guy in Australia. He made a safer amphetamine and got it passed through their congress to be legal. From there, it just went crazy with counterfeiters in China. Still going now, they sell artificial stimulants, depressants and canabanoids. As soon as they make it illegal, they just adjust it by one or two minor changes in the compound and just like that its not technically illegal. Ya, worst part was watching the clips of the high kids out of their minds on this stuff but nothing like what you described. This stuff is scary because they even went to the places in China to show these dirty labs making it. No clue what half this stuff is and kids will be trying all of it.
