It’s worth pointing out that DeRogatis played a large part in breaking the R. Kelly story, and his careful, meticulous work on that story couldn’t stand in greater contrast to Rolling Stone’s UVA piece. His work gives such a lie to Rolling Stone’s excuse — we were just too sensitive to rape victims, you guys! — because he gave a real voice to victims that were being marginalized in every direction and supported them through actual journalism.

Is RS still relevant? Honest question. Haven't picked one up in a long time or read online.

    1. Rolling Stone has long been a shameless pimp for whoever is selling the best at the moment. They have zero integrity or credibility. 2. Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal of Lester Bangs in Almost Famous is just brilliant. What an actor he was.

My favorite fun fact about his performance in Almost Famous (one of my favorite films) is that PSH was like deathly ill with a cold for the 3 days he was shot.

To be fair, if you didn’t love Cracked Rear View, you don’t deserve to be employed.

Gaaaa...the stakes are lower, but your headline and story is as factually inaccurate as Erdely’s piece. In DeRogatis’s own words, he wasn’t fired for disliking a shitty band, but rather for telling the Observer: “Jann Wenner is a fan of any band that sells eight million records.” Would anyone be surprised to get fired for shit talking their boss in a newspaper? Come one. I’m all for exposing poor journalistic practice, but it doesn’t help when your critique only serves as another example of the problem.

Well, I definitely disagree with you saying that this is “as factually inaccurate as Erdely’s piece” and I do think that this review is effectively the thing that got DeRogatis fired. He wrote it, Wenner pulled it because of advertising reasons (Atlantic had just bought a fuck ton of space in the mag), DeRogatis called him out and he was fired. I hear you — “The Hootie & the Blowfish Review That Exposed Pay-For-Play Music Journalism That the Writer Spoke Out About and Then Got Fired From Rolling Stone” is more accurate — but I got a 70-character hed limit and no patience for comparing a very quick blog post with all its cards on the table to something like Rolling Stone’s months-long UVA hide-and-seek game

But DeRogatis was right, Fairweather Johnson was a big disappointment.

Love Jim DeRogatis - interviewed him about his show (with Greg Kot) Sound Opinions which then ran on WXRT - now on 'BEZ. Rolling Stone has never been above a little major label pandering. It's hard when you also have to sell advertising, isn't it Jann?

Anyone else curious what the editor actually said when he told DeRogatis that he “[didn’t know anything about music]”?
