I'm a huge John Oliver fan, and this was the weakest episode of his show yet. A real missed opportunity with the Snowden interview.

I thought it was excellent. Which opportunities were missed?

I think the show covers fantastic topics that no one else does, I just don't think he's near as funny as people seem to make out.

However you slice it, Snowden committed a treasonous act. Hard to believe he was unaware of that fact. In any event, the wonderful irony is that he has taken refuge in Putin's Russia, a wellspring of freedom. He should come back and face the music - or shut up.

I realize it's a stretch but so did G. Washington et al

Additionally, when the dust settles his intent was not to cause lasting net damage to the people of the United States, which is what a traitor would do. For that reason Manning can rot in his/her prison cell.

Are people glossing over the part when John Oliver asked Snowden very pointed questions about his responsibility to know what was being leaked?

Apparently, which is a shame. I admire what he did, but Oliver had a damn good point that deserves discussion, especially for future whistleblowers.

Agreed!!! One of the best documentaries since We Steal Secrets. Edward Snowden is a martyr of his own making, but a brilliant bastard who gave us the keys to our own destiny in this country. Now, if only the people would use them... That being said, the movie is amazing. My friend gave me the movie and said you have to watch this, I asked what it was about and he said it's right up your alley. It was a great surprise.

He really made him look a bit young and foolish with that.

Let's see, you say that the NSA has a loaded gun to our heads but we can't trust them to not use it against us, but you're totally confident that the FOR PROFIT MEDIA can be trusted with the same loaded gun?

I've been pretty supportive (internally) of Snowden, but I have to question his discretion here.

It's not a joke if it is legitimately the only way to get people to care.

I don't think it was a joke. It was taking an abstract idea (government tracking of your "data") and making your data something incredibly personable (dick pics), and showing that when you put it into a concept people could actually grasp, their opinions where much more refined and firm.

    "That's the guy from WikiLeaks..."

John Q. BudBoy & family doesn't give one little mouse fart about Ed Snowden. Unfortunately they forgot everything they learned in history class. From the Egyptians and Romans, from the Crusades to the NSA spying on US citizens (and everybody else).

Now think the Magna Carta. The Constitution? Wait, how many people died making those things happen? Or wait, the Declaration of Independence? No taxation without... what? They wrote the law so the NSA could do whatever they wanted. So, the NSA is spending $20 million a month of your tax dollars, how much of that is actually going to protecting YOU?

How about a little Shakespeare? Give corrupt pricks the power, hey boy, they gonna fuck you in the ass with it. Then, hey boy, they gonna destroy everything defending it.

Next, read the Iraq (we gonna fuck THEM in the ass like it or not) letter to Bill Clinton in 1998.

History is all about conspiracy. Ed Snowden outed the latest version of it. And John Q. BudBoy could give a rat's ass.

The John Oliver piece was brilliant.

I find it hilarious that people actually think the NSA captures and stores your pics and phone conversations! Do people know what METADATA is? That's what is being captured and correlated, not the actual content unless there is an active investigation based on the metadata findings...

I'll give it up to Stuart Pankin and company, they definitely didn't take themselves as seriously as the Daily Show/offshoots, or feel the need to play Schoolhouse Rock for a half million already-converts on premium cable.

This interview... is brilliant. I don't care what anyone else thinks. Snowden has obviously spent a lot of time with these programs and knows what he's talking about. Don't be distracted by the dick talk. It summarizes everything perfectly and with humor. This is my favorite episode.

Snowden has obviously spent a lot of time with these programs and knows what he's talking about.

Okay, and Dr. Ben Carson has also spent a lot of time around science and medicine. And have you by chance heard any of his opinions regarding the two subjects?

Snowden has spent SO much time with this shit, it's completely taken over his life. Even if something were incorrect in his findings after the fact, do you think he would admit it and be like, oh oops, made a mistake here. No. No he wouldn't. He is like a religious person who's been deep into the church for years. No amount of evidence or talking about facts can convince him of a single thing he doesn't already believe.

He and Greenwald are bat shit crazy and literally define what 'closed-minded' means, but if anything involves a government conspiracy, we all know the people who brought it to light are going to be propped up by the public to the extreme, because all of you love a good government conspiracy theory.

In a very short succinct manner (well at least in the last several minutes), John Oliver/Edward Snowden managed to summarize the programs Snowden shared info on and how they function. That is what I'm appreciating. The fact that people were distracted by the fact that he used dicks instead of information just proves the point that we as a society are easily distracted by stupid things and miss the point entirely.

I agree that Snowden's entire life is devoted to these programs to the point of being a fanatic. How else could you explain a person who was willing to give up his entire life to try to prove a point?

Also, I'm no conspiracy theorist. But I don't find any of this stuff unbelievable. Actually I pretty much expected this sort of stuff was going on. I have known people who worked for the NSA who told me about stuff like this that they did for their job. It's not new. It's been going on forever. They just have computers now to help and a wider array of options to collect information on people. That's what they do. What else would we expect from a government entity called the National Security Agency?
