This story will never go away, because now the rape apologists who think that upstanding young men regularly have their lives ruined by crazy bitches making false accusations will have twice as many famous cases to point to as they did before.

There's another "famous" case like this?

Every single time a story about this runs, the Duke Lacrosse case gets mentioned several times in the comments.

    TL;DR

We had a prurient story that was going to sell a shitzillion magazines and we were't going to let a little thing like the truth get in the way.

This has been your not-really-necessary reminder that "news" is a business.

    Ahhh. I'm still kinda torn.

Yes, our "protagonist" Jackie fabricated her entire story & that is heinous journalism. There is no excuse or defence for that. The only reason I'm torn is because there were other victims in that piece who told truthful stories about their experiences on that campus that have now been entirely forgotten because of Jackie & her need to tell Fairy Tales, and Rolling Stone's need to believe her without due diligence.

This story shed light on a very real problem actually happening at UVa & on College Campuses across the continent. What about the advisor that was interviewed & had counselled other victims besides Jackie? We know they exist. Something still needs to be done.

Just because one woman wasn't telling the truth doesn't mean there isn't still a very real issue to be addressed.

And? This is not the only article or news piece focusing on the issues of university campus sexual assault by a far cry so I don't see why that's relevant. You act like it was talking about something that had never been discussed before.

Yes. The issue is that intelligent, college educated women are apparently being raped en masse and refusing to report these vicious and heinous crimes to the authorities, so that these terrible predators can be locked up kept away for other unsuspecting, and equally justice-phobic women.

Sounds like s rape bonanza I know where I would go if I was being released form jail. Somewhere no one reports crimes.

I can't help but feel sorry for the story's author. I mean, how hard to you push a rape survivor? That is a tough position to be in, even if she is a professional journalist. And does this mean that the next woman who wants to tell her story is going to be endlessly grilled and doubted? Cause that sucks. One step forward, two steps back.

I don't feel sorry at all. She was told very specific details and RS decided to publish those very specific details without verifying any of them, including the very existence of the alleged mastermind from her anthropology class who works with her at the pool. If you don't want to push a rape survivor, just leave all those very specific details out of the story.

An apology would have included direct comments toward the individuals most embroiled in her deception, the fraternity at UVA. She had an agenda, she let her confirmation bias and her need for this story to be true blind her to integrity. She has done significant harm to all rape victims everywhere, and all journalists who cover sexual crime. She deserves to be fired, and never work in field again. What she did was worse than Glass, or other names filling the list of infamy of the journalistic trash heap.

I can't imagine any respectable outlet will ever again hire Erdely again. No fucking way! Especially after RS ponies up millions and millions of dollars they don't have to settle the lawsuits. You'd have to be insane to hire a "journalist" that puts your business at this kind of risk. Plus, who will believe anything she ever writes again anyway?

Yet Wenner has specifically noted they will hire Erdely to write for them again.

"Mr. Wenner said that Ms. Erdely would continue to write for Rolling Stone, and that Will Dana, the magazine’s managing editor, and the editor of the article, Sean Woods, would keep their jobs."

I know everyone hates frats these days, and i can see why with some of the stories you read about assault or hazing. But i wonder if the members of Phi Kappa Psi will get a formal apology? These men were accused of some really horrific and terrible things. Many of them surely faced severe backlash on campus, that im sure has yet to cease. They deserve an apology from rolling stone. Everyone wants to fight for a victim until the victim is someone they don't like.

How does Erdely get to keep her job after this? She rocks the country with a scandalous story that turns out to be fictitious and the response is "Meh." Unbelievable. Congratulations on destroying any progress being made towards the handling of sexual assaults on campus, I guess?

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those "we're not going to punish anyone here, whoops never mind the whole country now thinks we're the fucking worst, we're going to fire people now" story. They can't possibly think anyone will read Erdely's work and consider it legit henceforth, can they?

True that. This reminds me of the MN Vikings initial 1-game suspension of Adrian Peterson, followed by an idiotic news conference with the Radisson logo on the backdrop.... Followed by Radisson dropping their sponsorship, more dropped sponsors and a media shit storm against them reinstating him.

And then the Vikes caved to public pressure. Folks is gonna get fired at RS over this... The shit storm is just starting.
