If she’s still employed, Rolling Stone hasn’t offered sufficient apology.

But hey, we were all “idiots” to cast doubt on her, weren’t we, Jezebel?

I don’t believe I called anyone a rape apologist or chewed people out over this particular story (I did about one soon after, though), but if I had I would stand by it even now. People weren’t doubting her because there were holes in her story, they were doubting her because they’re fucking rape apologists. They were the same assholes who doubt women every time, they’re the same assholes who try to silence women’s narratives, they’re the same assholes who don’t believe we live in a “rape culture” and believe the reports of campus assaults are either patently false or the victim’s fault.
So no. You weren’t idiots for doubting it, if you doubted it before evidence started coming out about how it may have been falsified you are a rape apologist asshole. :)
Hope I cleared that up for you.

Well, the Jezebel writer who called someone an idiot for doubting the story apologized for it, so...good point, I guess? What’s next? Are you going to make fun of the Catholic Church for admitting the Earth revolves around the sun?

This is hardly the most important thing at stake here, but I’m curious to see what happens to Erdely’s career after this. How do you recover from such a monumental fuck up, that everyone knows about, that had such major consequences? Her career as a freelance journalist has to be over (right??), but it will be interesting to see where she ends up.

This is like a writer’s worst nightmare. It’s up there with plagiarism. When you’re relying on witnesses, you can only be certain of so much, so I feel like there is always some worry about “what if they’re lying to me?” Erdeley screwed up, don’t get me wrong — she could have avoided this fate by doing some basic fact checking. But even if some basic stuff had checked out (like the frat holding a party that night) this type of story ultimately relies on trust. Anyway, I just cannot imagine fucking up this badly, and what a nightmare it must be — deserved or not.

      Nope, she’s keeping her job:

Mr. Wenner said that Ms. Erdely would continue to write for Rolling Stone, and that Will Dana, the magazine’s managing editor, and the editor of the article, Sean Woods, would keep their jobs.

I think she should apologize, but her boss and whoever else made the decision to run this article should also apologize.

So, why would Sabrina Rubin Erdely choose to sensationalize such a lurid story when there are so many actual campus rapes?

Reading through her archive, she seems to gravitate towards stories that are full of lurid, voyeuristic details. If you read some of her old pieces, like the ones about the two abused heirs, or the one about the female patients who were assaulted by their OB/GYN, it’s like she loves to revel in the gruesome degradation of other people’s horror stories.

It’s almost like a rescue complex where she’s the hero. So when a horrifying farce of story like this came along, of course she flouted any journalistic standards in order to pursue it.
