The pizzeria has been shut down because of all the violent threats the owner have received. While I very strongly disagree with the owners’ sentiments, I disagree even more strongly with those who have successfully caused the pizzeria to shutter its doors. Making violent threats is a far worse transgression that refusing to cater a wedding with your pizza.

Furthermore, I’m disappointed in Jezebel for not even mentioning the reason why the pizzeria is now shuttered.

I don’t know if I actually agree with you that violent threats are worse than homophobia (I’m kind of tipsy and not thinking very deeply tonight), but you make a good point regardless. Threats of violence really aren't okay.

So I don’t know if people heard, but there was an incident with a Big Apple Bagels in Indy over the weekend as well. Someone posted this picture as something they saw at the location:

They had 400 1-star reviews on FB within 24 hours. I’m surprised they didn’t have to shut the page down. It was an onslaught.

I call bullshit. They got idiots to fund their renovations/new house. It’s such an easy scam to do these days. There’s no line of gay people demanding pizza for their wedding. No reason why this conversation ever had to involve this woman or their business. I’m sure they serve gay people every day without knowing or giving a royal fuck. So get the fuck outta here with this premeditated shit.

She came out with such a random fucking announcement, because by now everyone knows how twitters reacts to everything. Twitter goes crazy, which triggers the blogs to throw out the crazy headlines and the poor backwards news stations are at this point forever playing catch up with social media, will rush to regurgitate this “breaking news story” to the masses. Now they’re ‘persecuted’ over their faith and forced to close for business so what happens? Magically they get showered with cash by fellow bigots who think everyone should have the right to be as bigoted as they want because it’s a free society. You socially conscious assholes just need to suck it, cause you’re infringing on their right to infringe yours.

    Best Scam Ever!

The gofundme page (now over $40K) was created by a writer for The Blaze, long known for their balanced approach to current events. I smell an even bigger scam in the making.

Maybe the O’Connors should have kept their fat yaps shut. I can’t imagine many people, gay or straight, would want a pizza joint to cater their wedding, but they were so eager to point out how Christian they are and how much they loved the law that will let them discriminate based on their “sincerely held religious beliefs”. Just don’t count on Jesus paying your bills.

This is what kills me about these “Christian” business owners. A photographer/baker/florist/DJ/venue/caterer could easily avoid booking a gay wedding* or whatever else makes them feel morally uncomfortable (ugh)—EASILY—by just saying “Sorry, looks like we’re already booked that weekend.” Done. That would be the end of their stupid little personal problem. But no. These assholes are so fucking wound up about the notion that gay people are finally achieving basic human rights—like hopefully being allowed to exist unmolested—and vocally refusing service is their peabrained little version of “taking a stand”. They can’t just lie and say they’re booked to avoid serving The Gays, nooooo, they have to stand up and shout it from the rooftops instead: “No, this is a Christian establishment. We don’t service gays, sorry. You mad, bro? God bless!”

*Not that they should lie to avoid service, mind you, just that they could. Any business owner who actually, truthfully wished to abstain from involvement in a same-sex wedding solely because it made them feel morally conflicted would simply say “No thanks” without further embellishment. Any business owner who has to say why, to a gay person’s face, isn’t concerned with their own personal religious freedom. No, that person wants that customer and anyone else who’ll listen to know just how they feel about gay people. Period. That’s not a defense of personal religious freedom. That’s a display of what a huge, gaping asshole one is. Period.

I think they made their big announcement about not serving gay weddings so they could martyr themselves, claim victimhood and raise tons of cash. They only had TWO yelp reviews before this happened so I don’t think they were doing all that well. Now, they’re 40K richer. Before long, they’ll have a book deal and a reality show.

I would respect them for standing up for their beliefs if they also refused to cater a wedding of prior divorcees, of people who had pre-martial sex, of non-Christians, of people who work for a credit card company charging high interest, of people who lie, of people who ever had an abortion, or any other people who do not live in accordance with their “Christian beliefs.” But to pick and choose which “sinners” they are gonna refuse to work with and which they won't is just damn hypocritical.

Exactly! If Christians want to exclude sinners from their business dealings then they need to spread that hate around. “No Banksters Allowed” “Please present valid marriage license to cashier” “Clients not currently in a ‘State of Grace’ will be served at the back door”

Two short mentions of homosexuality in the bible. That’s it. The rest talks about love thy neighbor, God created everyone in his likeness, judge others lest ye be judged and compassion for all. It’s incredible that these so called “Christians” focus solely on two verses and ignore the countless references to everything else. You don’t get to pick and chose what parts you wish to uphold and then scream “religious freedom” when called out on your discriminatory practices and think anybody is going to believe you. You’ve already made it crystal clear that you know nothing about the very religion you claim is so important to you.

    Assholes.

I’ve seen elsewhere these people referred to as “Leviticans” rather than “Christians” as they seem to care much more about the contents of Leviticus than the teachings of Christ. I’d like to see that catch on more broadly.
