People just don't seem to understand the current streaming model is fucking unsustainable. The first prices were set to repay investors and create market value for the streaming property, and left a big fat fucking zero for the artists.

So, my guess is, this venture is an attempt to course correct the market, getting consumers to re-evaluate what it really costs to get music - which at $20 a month is STILL a hell of a lot less than it used to be for the average music consumer after you tally up buying 2-3 physical records a month.

Of course Madonna, et al, don't need the money. The point is, they're trying to make sure there are artists around ten, twenty, fifty years from now. This is similar to what a group of actors did back in the 1920s with United Artists to derail a greedy Hollywood studio system.

And btw, a pre-emptive qualifier: I don't work for Tidal. But I did run an indie music label for fifteen years and know firsthand just how shitty and broken the music business is.

Except you didn't mention what it costs to see them live. Albums are basically marketing tools for their tours.

It's a very, very, very small percentage of artists who can make enough on the road to sustain their careers.

It's funny, because piracy became so rampant and out of control in the first place due to the high price of physical media, coupled with the fact that most cds coming out at the time would consist of one really good song, 2 mediocre songs, and the rest being absolute filler crap.

When services like Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, etc were introduced, the rate of piracy began to plummet, the simple reason being is that users were now able to pay a reasonable price for obtaining music, and pick and choose what songs/titles they wanted. It didn't eliminate piracy, but it definitely helped curb it.

So now what are they doing? Pulling their music from services which have shown to be successful, introducing them into their own closed network platform, and charging twice as much. Congratulations, you're creating more pirates.

I think their resources would be better utilized if they paid to assemble a death squad to renegotiate their percentages with the labels. A lossless streaming service? Too few shit-givers and a smaller catalog than most of the competition.

Madonna is the pop music version of that elderly relative we all have that just won't give up their driver's license and nobody has the heart to demand it from them.

It's Madonna. She's always been like this. Besides, until we tell all of the Paul McCartneys and Mick Jaggers of the world their dyed hair, gyrating dance moves and rock and roller schtick looks too old for this shit, I say carry on girl.

Do those Daft Punk helmets get hot? I just always think they're in there sweating away. All day and all night. Sweat, sweat, sweat.

And that wherever they keep them smells like that pile of hockey gear that's on the floor of your friend's garage.

I think there's a photo article about all the stuff in Deadmau5's helmet, including some fans.

Also, it's funny to think that he isn't really known as much for his music, than that stupid helmet.

What the fuck is Madge talking about in that video? This all is seriously bonkers.

Also, the only way this makes sense is if they exclusively offer their music through their new service. If someone can get the same content elsewhere, why would they bother to pay for Tidal?

Not a heavy British accent, but not exactly American either.

But we really need a transcript for this video bc the parts I heard are as narcissistic and grandiose as a Kanye interview.

Madge: "This is about putting art back in the forefront. About bringing humanity back to being artists - not technology, art, human art."

      WTF??
