My understanding is that his parents, and I think his sister, are still Scientologists. Somehow he has managed to cut ties with the church while still maintaining a relationship with his family. This is kind of a rare occurrence, and maybe one that he has negotiated through his power as a celebrity.

I think his family are Scientologists, but as an adult he has no affiliation with the church.

Yeah she’s kind of the only one on the list that I feel like is just too smart to be on the list. Oh well. :-(

I assumed Seinfeld was smarter than that. I always have assumed (good) comedians are smarter than actors.

Nancy Cartwright is not the voice of Flanders or Wiggum. That’s Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria respectively.

Was in Hollywood last night and stopped by the Scientology Center out there. This was around midnight and I thought they would be closed. Nope. They were out recruiting HARDCORE. And I found they open late when there’s a big thing happening so they can “introduce” people to what they “have to offer.” The whole interaction was quite amazing.

But I saw that documentary and it said they only tell you about the crazy volcano shit waaaay into the religion. I wonder if they’ve been changing their methods since their whole mythos has become more widespread through the internet.

From my understanding, the Dianetics film they show is one similar to those released in the 1980s. “The film is about how one can move themselves away from stress and free their mind,” one of the two “ushers” told me. The video, they said, is about thirty minutes. And if you wanted a condensed version, it was two minutes long.

Posting this again: I would like to encourage everyone to sign this petition to urge the IRS to review (and hopefully revoke) Scientology’s tax exempt status. If they hadn’t harassed the IRS to give them a 501c3 classification in the first place, they would have been long gone!

So clearly these people are joining Scientology to boost their career right? How many of these people actually believe this crap? Or are they just into it for the psychological part, not as a religion?

I just remember in Going Clear (the book) Hubbard first tried to publish the idea of Dianetics in a peer-reviewed journal and they were like "yeah, right," so he decided to create a religion instead.

So, from what I understand, Scientology as a religion is hokey. Blah blah blah aliens, Xenu, blah blah, explosions, craziness. But as an organization, incredibly cunning.

They essentially give invasive therapy sessions (I imagine it to be like the Riddler’s machine in Batman Forever) to have members re-experience their worst traumas and secrets. This is how they end up with dirt on celebrities (like John Travolta). It’s also why I assume it makes people so faithful to the church. Because therapy actually works, and most people will swear by it because it makes them feel better.

Then add into it that Scientology actually does have helpful classes (like a community college), and it actually ends up seeming like a very inviting organization.

      It kinda scares me.

A surprising number (like not the majority but a good chunk) are second generation scientologists.

I think the order was he tried to get it published as legitimate psychology. Then he created it as a self-help seminar. And only after the self-help seminar faded out of popularity he made it a religion.

Nancy Cartwright voices Ralph Wiggum. Chief Wiggum is voiced by Hank Azaria. And Nancy got into trouble for recording a Scientology robo-call donation message in character as Bart.

I don’t believe that this list provides any practical or other purpose and should be removed. Would you make a similar list of Catholics? Jews? Baptists? Hindus? Bhuddists? Or any other religion? Or Gays? Lesbians? Transsexuals? I know many people don’t consider Scientology a religion, but for the time being, it is. (No, I am not and have never been a Scientologist.) Is this really what’s acceptable on Gawker?
