Did any POC jezzies go through the thing in high school where the teacher would NEVER pick you to answer or to participate in out of school events?

Yes. My mother also sued the school district to get us into AP programs that had "limited space."

Part of the problem is that white girls are just troubled girls acting out, but black girls are treated as grown women way too much, even when we're like 12.

Another problem is that behavior that they wouldn't even notice in a white girl but identify as aggression or unacceptable attitude from a black girl.

At least that's what it was like in my high school. Because they feel more threatened by black people in general, a little snit that a white girl would totally get away with because she's a bratty middle schooler becomes INSUBORDINATION in a black girl.

Was coming here to say this. Even though I'm white it just seems like black kids aren't allowed to be kids, they need to act like mini adults.

No one is purple you braindead fuck. Maybe Violet Beauregard. But more bluish in hue. "I don't care if they are purple, " is so goddamn disingenuous. Way to trivialize reality and look like an asshole in the process. Facts are facts. Statistics don't lie. Fuck out of here with that purple shit.

I'm going to paraphrase Jay Smooth here, because I can't find the video where he addressed this: No one cares if someone is purple because being purple is not a thing. Being black in America is a thing that people live and experience every day. When you say things like "I don't care if you're purple" you dismiss the experiences of actual black people by comparing them to something imaginary.

That educator certainly doesn't care if someone is purple, but he sure as hell cares if she is black.

Yep, that about sums up the attitude of the Hamilton County School officials here. My daughter is finishing up this year in 2nd grade and next year will be enrolled at a school right over the line in GA and I cant wait. She is white but this study is dead on about racial bias in regards to discipline. BTW, my now ex is a school teacher here and would agree with this article 100 percent.

When I'm appointed God-Emperor of Earth, a small implanted device in each person's brain will cause them to feel momentary but intense pain every time they use the phrase "I don't care if they're purple" in references to race.

You should care about people who are purple, because it means they are about to die of hypoxia.

Boy howdy did I get to see this in action!

My small, skinny daughter is regularly bullied at school, which has led to a fairly serious social anxiety issue where she ends up using the bathroom on herself, which leads to her being bullied even further. Vicious cycle here we come. Reporting things to the teachers/administration did absolutely nothing, so I joined an organization at the school that puts me in the position of meeting with the school principal at least once a month. Somehow the treatment of my daughter got much better.

Fast forward to this past week, when one of the boys who was trying to make himself seem "cool" to the popular boys decided to try to run back and forth in line. My daughter pointed out that what he was doing was unfair to the other kids that were waiting their turn. He decides to get mouthy and insult her. When she returned the insults, he punches and kicks her. She beat his ass. When the Principal appears, it's suddenly all her fault, and nobody admits that he provoked her. So I get the phone call, and SHE gets sent home for the day, without any of her work, while he gets to stay at school. I had a fairly unbelievable conversation with the Principal in that while my daughter has never been in any real trouble, they were treating this as a harbinger of things to come. My daughter is Black; the kid fucking with her was not.

While I am honest enough to admit that I am not sure whether this was over punishing due to race, or the historic reluctance to ignore bullying, this still burns me up every time I think about it.

I'm not saying this isn't a race thing, but I was pretty severely bullied in school (I r white) and nobody believed me or stood up for me. I know teachers saw it and walked away. I know they ignored it. And when I retaliated I was punished. I think a big problem is that people who are bullied, especially girls, are taught to be passive and just accept it. "Don't provoke them, just ignore it, they want to get a rise out of you", etc. I'm sure black kids are taught not to piss off white people. At least it wouldn't surprise me.

Well, my friend kicked some kid in the face for teasing her (he might have needed dental work, haha!) and got a 3 day suspension. I was extremely proud of her and told her so. Dude deserved it hardcore. I've never seen bullies get punished for being assholes, only their victims when we've had enough and fight back. I'm sorry your daughter is going through that.

I'd be more interested to see some more qualifiers added here - the racist can easily shrug this off by saying "black kids are just worse than white kids, so of course they get suspended more." It actually reinforces the worldview of someone who thinks that way.

What would be really useful data is the level of punishment per crime. Are black students punished more harshly for the same issue? Are they punished for minor infractions while white students get off scot free?

Yeah, this is a really good test case for confirmation bias. Both racists and anti racists could hold up a spread sheet with these results to "prove" their points.

This is really no different than the FBI statistics on the arrest rates for blacks. Both sides use 'em.

Absolutely, yes. There was a crowd of cheerleaders at my school who happened to be black and called themselves the Fashion Police (lol) because they'd been called into the office for dress code violations so many times, even for cheerleader uniforms, and the white cheerleaders hadn't. So after that debacle kind of filtered out at the end of football season they would hand out "citations" for what they thought should be dress code violations. It was bitchy, but I totally understood why they did it, even more now that I'm older. A lot of us thought it was bullshit that they kept taking the fall in the first place, there were maybe five people in that whole school who never violated the dress code.

I went to a predominantly black high school in a very racially diverse town that was the first to voluntarily integrate schools and this shit was true for us. I can only fucking imagine how true it is when your teachers/principal did not actively protest and work for the Civil Rights Movement.
