It's not surprising in the least. Mike Pence (and Mitch Daniels before him) have done their best to make Indiana the most embarrassing state in the Midwest. Wisconsin gets all the pub, but, Indiana has secretly been the absolute worst. This is a guy who is destroying public education in Indiana, refused Medicaid expansion until it was in some bullshit form that doesn't help the poor, and proposed a Constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage. My only solace is that 1) this will be deemed unconstitutional and 2) this fucking dickhead will be viewed on the absolute wrong side of history. And even big businesses in Indiana were pleading with him not to sign the bill! They realized it's going to hurt Indiana's reputation, and even now, businesses are talking about pulling out of the state, AND the NCAA is "reevaluating" its relationship with Indianapolis, which has been its home for years. So thanks a lot, fuckhead.

Anyway, if any Jezzies want to help me kickstart a coffee shop in my parents' hometown for the EXPLICIT purpose of inviting Mike Pence and then refusing him service because he's a homophobe, please hit me up.

If you do something, let us know - I'll pass the info on to my FB friends in the area. I imagine they'd be glad to join forces with likeminded folk :)

I have friends in Indiana who are really angry that this went through, and are looking to start up some kind of protest, even if it's just an online petition. I don't know how effective it'll be but I can understand not wanting to feel helpless in the face of such stupidity.

I'm in Indianapolis, and from what I'm seeing online, I just don't see how this is even a thing. So so so many people oppose it; of course, this could just be that I surround myself with good and likeminded people. It's hard to know what to do now; helpless is absolutely the right word.

Hopefully Ballard coming out against it will be an asset in pushing back on it. It sounds like a number of groups that were set to have conventions in Indianapolis are making plans to convene elsewhere now that this law's been signed in, and that's helpful too. I hope.

To be fair, this bill exists in 18 or so other states as well. I would like to thank the supporters of this bill for pointing that out so we can get it fucking abolished in every single one of them. There is no place in this world for that kind of hate and bigotry, and, hell, there's no place for religion either.

Mike Pence completely ignored all the people he was elected to represent. Not a single fucking person I know from my home state wanted this piece of shit law to be signed again. Even the most hardcore conservatives are talking about how much of a joke this is.

As a life-long Indiana resident, I'm so upset about this bill. My family is here, my friends are here, and I generally enjoy living here, but this makes me totally ashamed to live here and makes me want to move. Local city officials here in Indianapolis, including the Republican mayor, are looking into ways to get around the law, but I'm worried there's nothing they can do at this point. Fuck you Mike Pence.

I said it yesterday, but I can't believe Indiana Democrats couldn't find a credible person to run against Mike Pence. He's a disaster, and if you spent five seconds watching him in Congress, you KNEW he was going to pull some shit like this when he became governor.

I don't think there's any hope on the horizon.

Dear everyone in Indiana that opposes this legislation,

Please make it a point to stop patronizing any and all places of business that intend to use this legislation. Do feel free to use this legislation against itself, showing how bad for society it is, and just bad of a business-related piece of shit legislation it is.

I wonder if it goes the other way around.

You get your food, or some other cost for the restaurant/local, and the manager walks over and says you guys are out because we don't serve <insert whatever> but says you owe us for this and this, and you refuse to pay citing you refuse service to them based off the fact they won't believe in <insert reason here>, or some other factor raised in this bill.

But either way. Businesses who follow this model are going to burn to the ground really fast, and that will be funny to watch. So while we're being discriminated against, we can have some amusement at least, because word now gets around realllllly fast.

This law will be repealed the second a Muslim business owner refuses to serve a Christian patron. Remember, religious discrimination only goes one way.

The Muslim who dares to do that will have a miserable time courtesy of all the city's elected officials who will give him a hard time because his business does not comply with local regulations and claim it's totally unrelated to that time he refused to serve that idiot Christian guy. Laws in America only work one way indeed.

Yeah, but if all that happens, the outside support that Muslim would get from everyone else who has two working brain cells to rub together will make those city officials look even worse than they already would.

I'm taking a road trip in a couple weeks that involves driving through Indiana. I'm considering a few things: going through Illinois instead (which may add time onto said trip), or trying to get through Indiana without stopping. I don't want to spend a cent there.

Depending on which way you're traveling, it's entirely possible to not stop in Indiana, or if you do stop, just at one of those rest stops that the state pays for but you don't since you don't live there. The other thing my friends who live there are starting to do is when they enter a place, ask if they discriminate under RFRA and leave if they do. Every single place, unless it's one of the many many small businesses that have come out against the bill.

Of course they are! Satanists have gotten a bad rap because people think they worship Satan... when really most of them are just trolling Christians for being the close-minded dickwads that many (but not all!) Christians are.
