I'll just say that even though it's good advice never to make major decisions based on anything Comcast tells you, I feel like transferring the blame to customers who do is just letting Comcast off the hook.

You should be able to trust the companies you do business with, at least as far as the basic ability to exchange your money for their goods and services. Especially in an industry where so few customers have the option of going to a competitor.

You should be able to trust the companies you do business with,...

While I agree with this 100%, there are enough horror stories about Comcast and others that we should know that we cannot trust them. That is not to blame this user.

I do have one additional question. Was the house wired for cable? As in, were there cable outlets in various rooms? If there weren't, then I would want to ask the seller why? If it was new construction, then I would ask the builder why? This, of course, ties back to your idea that making the sale of the house conditional on actual working cable wired in the house.

I guess my point is that for someone who knew he needed broadband in his house he does not seem to have done all his homework. I suppose it is another example of Caveat Emptor.

I have to add one more note. I do not want this to sound like I blame the buyer. I don't. I think he got screwed. I just think that it is was that important, he might have done more to ensure that he was going to be able to cable before he moved in.

after half a dozen visits—both scheduled and unscheduled—from Comcast techs who hadn't been informed about his problem and arrived thinking they'd just have to install a cable box.

Had this so many times. Tech arrives. Can't fix the problem - it's too technical and he wasn't prepared. The call centre says they will send out someone else who can.
    Next dude arrives, same deal.
    Lather, rinse, repeat.
The solution I came up with eventually was to string a cable from the back of my cable box, out my front window and down four floors to the main box in the alley at street level. (I was forced to steal the cable I was paying for)
Probably illegal, and anyone walking by could have pulled my cable box across my living room, but at least I had Archer.

I moved into a new construction building and Comcast didn't realize that meant running a line across the street until after the first technician came. They promised to do so over the course of 2 weeks and I took a day off to wait for a second technician. Of course, they didn't, but he was so determined (I think the fact that I was 7 months pregnant helped). When he couldn't get a bucket truck out, the dude climbed a freaking telephone pole and walked the line across the street. Combine that with a rope and hanging off my deck, he did manage to get everything hooked up.

Of course, now I have Comcast.

Not to mention there are other internet services that can piggyback onto phone towers. No doubt Comcast fucked with this guy, but there *are* other options besides the other name-brand ISP.

Satellite doesn't really work for software engineers. Have you ever tried doing anything over satellite that requires a low latency connection? It just doesn't work.

I don't mean to be unsympathetic to this guy, but how did he not know the house was not wired for cable and the nearest connection point is 2,500 feet away? Was there no inspection for the home? Did he not ask the realtor?

I'm not sure who gave him the $60,000 number, but that seems seriously high for 2,500 feet. I would believe $25-35k, but not $60k for data. He ought to ask them again what it would cost if he brought the line out himself. And then he should sue his real estate broker for the cost.

The article says he tried to get the work done independently and Comcast just doesn't want to bother.

I would think they would bother if he called them and asked them to hook up to a box that he provided at their pole.

I actually had almost the same problem with Time Warner cable. I moved into a new home in June of last year, Time warner stated "We have cable down the street in that subdivision," so we closed, and moved in. Called a technician out to do the install....and nothing.

I was told that we were in an "Underground" portion of an overhead system, and that the underground didn't have any cabling, or service yet. They were unwilling to give me an answer.

I called Time Warner's customer service to complain, and that did me no good.

Unfortunately, what I had to do was get dual-bonded DSL from CenturyLink (ugh) until someone from Time Warner's Investor Relations and CEO customer service team got back to me. I played for them my phone call with the CSR who took my order initially (which, my phone system recorded automatically), and then their whole view on life changed.

It still took about 5 months to get the service installed...but, I now have Time Warner Cable Internet at home.

I would simply like to share the fact that 3 hours from now, I will be calling Time Warner Cable to say "You're Fired!' I've waited 12 years to say that to them - and could have done some time in the last 5 years since ATT U-Verse has been available in my neighborhood - however, creature of habit that I am, I procrastinated. But, today's the day! Goodbye cable, hello fiber-optic line - and hello more services for $55/month less!

Now, being of a certain age, I am old enough to remember the white-hot rage I had for ATT back when it was the loathsome telephone monopoly of yore, but TWC took the mantle of most odious monopoly some time ago, and ATT is technically now the upstart with newer technology, so, ever hopeful, here....

My father had U-Verse for about two years, and while it was okay, he thought it was exorbitantly priced for what he actually got. He switched over to Cox, and kept most of his entertainment options through Amazon Prime.

For me, I'll move to another damn city if my only choice ever becomes U-Verse, but that's because I still hate AT&T with the fire of 1,000 suns.

But wait, I thought the Republicans told me that there's plenty of broadband competition in the US and that the FCC shouldn't be setting net neutrality because it would disrupt the sweet, sweet market that works so well now.

Or have they just been lying to us, like aging whores who know their time is almost up?

From the FAQ on the page:

      Q: Well, what about Satellite?

A: The TV service would be just fine, but it carries a huge penalty for broadband. I work remotely full-time, and I require a VPN to access the main office. Satellite does not guarantee any support for VPN use (though I have heard a few anecdotal reports of people having success). The monthly bandwidth caps are also a killer, giving very little leeway in overage situations.
