Is there some really good reason why the clothes - esp. ones with tags still on - are shredded rather than donated to those in need? As you mention, a deep cleaning would take care of any suspected grossness and then these items could go to shelters or wherever they are needed.

I'm still just thrown by the total indictment of VS underwear to open the post. I'm a fan of the no-show hip hugger — comfortable with relatively invisible seams. My only complaint is that they eventually fall apart, but that's true of pretty much every no-show panty I've ever purchased and, hey, it's probably good to toss them at that point anyway. It's like a built in time stamp.

Why the hate? Is there some secretly fabulous brand of underwear I don't know about?

My thoughts exactly. My favorite underwear was always the cacique from Lane Bryant. When I lost weight I tried a bunch of different kinds but I found the VS is the closest thing to that. I just don't buy anything crazy, diamond encrusted, or espeically frilly.

Although I will add when I was still changing sizes frequently I bought some cheaper pairs from Walmart. The brand more marketed towards JRs, No Boundries maybe? Theyre identical to one of the Pink styles. If you took the tags off you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It made me wonder if they're manufactured by the same company.

Can I hijack this thread to crowdsource WHAT ARE THE MOST COMFORTABLE UNDERWEAR? I used to own lacy, pretty things but have realized that this NEVER makes the difference between me feeling sexy or having sexy times. . .so comfortable and yeast-infection preventing is what I'm after.

Most of my undies are VS cotton. The hiphuggers are the only thing that cover my booty. Gap makes really comfy cotton undies. I have a pair of their hipsters and a hipster tanga. I may only buy that brand going forward.

For bottoms, Uniqlo is great. I don't know about the bras. I'm big on top so I always wear Wacoal.

I know Victoria's Secret gets a lot of shit, but they still make some of the old bras that are comfortable for me to wear. I'm sensitive to underwire and I love their wireless Body by Victoria bras, and also the gel lining that some of the wire bras use. However, I would be in the market for a cheaper substitute.

GAP BODY. seriously. everyone scoffs at me when I tell them to check out the bras but they are generally really great. Only a little bit cheaper than vickies (like 35-40) but I have found them to be way more comfortable and also way more practical.

OMG TOTALLY. The nude, no-underwire Gap Body bras are the BEST. I wait till they go on sale for like $12.99 and buy 5 or 6 at once.

I get all my bras at Vicki's because they fit exactly. I do not have to try them on, I just pick up any 34DD, and I'm set. I kind of hate it, because her bras are terrible - there is NOTHING without underwire, no fun colors or styles in my size, and waaaay to pricey. But, easy. So.

The underwear, on the other hand. Oh, the underwear. How does anyone wear that shit? I go in and get my free pair every month, because free, but I seriously would not pay a dime for that crap.

ETA: Her bras fit me perfectly because I have implants. Her bras are made for fake boobs. LINE FACE.

Spot-on with the fake boobs thing. I'm very grateful to have a natural set of breasts that are built like fake ones: large breast root, a little bit of sag, and low swell (again, very grateful for this shape). The VS bras make them look even more like implants, which is fine to me, because I personally like that aesthetic.

I could totally see where this is a problem for women who have a natural breasts with a small root, or top swell. Bras, like breasts, come in a wide variety, and everyone's mileage varies. :)

I feel slightly ashamed about it but I am totally okay with this. Especially after that nasty ass article you guys had a few months back about retailers putting returned/used unders back on the floor. My germaphobic self is pleased by this.

Yea, I think they got huge backlash for putting returned panties back on the shelf.

Plus, after working at NIH for three years, you'd be surprised at all the ways people get STDs...

Yes, and when you consider how cheap it is to make another pair of panties, it seems like the cost-benefit analysis there would fall pretty heavily in favor of shredding. These are incredibly high-margin items. Trying to resell them would be basically like McDonald's trying to save a half a Coke they poured accidentally in hope that someone else orders a Coke within a few minutes.

Two "used" items I would never consider returning: makeup and panties. I'll eat the cost of my mistakes.

I return them all the time. If the store takes it back, why eat the cost? That's why I appreciate stores that destroy returned undies. Not sure what they do with the make up, but it's pretty obvious when it's been used.

Just three months ago we were all clutching our pearls at the prospect of VS failing to shred the panties. Make up my mind! http://jezebel.com/grab-your-pitc…

I can only imagine the outrage if the opposite were true: if VS returned used merchandise to the sales floor! (In fact, I feel like there WAS an article on Jez about just that thing and how disgusting it was) Shredding is the 100% preferable option, I don't want to wear someone's used underwear when I intend to buy new undies, no matter how many times they've been washed.

Frankly, I'm happy to hear that they destroy returned panties. If they're sealed in a package, like Hanes or other brands are at Target, that's fine. Otherwise, destroy them. You don't know what someone might have done to them.

Same here, I'm not really sure why this is surprising. Beauty stores do the same - I once ordered two eyeliners from Clinique and they arrived in the wrong color so I contacted customer service and offered to return them in exchange for the right color. Right away they said to keep them because they are going to get destroyed so it wasn't worth paying to send them back. Ulta and Sephora destroy all, I'm pretty sure.

There was some article that if you go dumpster diving behind beauty and department stores, you will find all kinds of unused high end stuff in there.
