While Pharrell is in his sheltered bubble talking about being a New Black, our folks are over here being subjected to New Lynchings, New Jim Crow and now New Slavery.

If I could star you 100 times I would. I don't even call him by his name anymore. To me and my sister he's new black no 2. Kanye is number 1, Raven Symone is number 3, and it hurts me to say it, but Common is now a member at number 4.

There is no excuse whatsoever for the ABC to have cops. None. This bunch needs to be disbanded now. Their last two misadventures on the UVA campus are just the ones that have come to light. Here in Harrisonburg they treat students at JMU with the same contempt as they did Martese Johnson and Elizabeth Daly (look up her case, the WHITE FEMALE student who was terrorized by ABC agents last summer after buying a case of sparkling water and some snacks late at night). They are little SS wannabes.

I don't know the details but given how this country treats black people I don't find it implausible that we are missing nothing and there is no in between.

Back to 1963? This is how it's always been (for black people). The only difference is social media documents it and makes it impossible (for white people) to ignore, although many are still doing their damndest to try.

I like his odds. There doesn't really appear to be any justification for beating and chaining a young man for trying to get into a damn college bar.

Also, there were multiple cops. You can't subdue a 21-year old without beating the shit out them?

Please, please, PLEASE, fellow Jezzies, don't feed the racist trolls. Don't pull them out of the grays. Dismiss any responses that are direct replies to you. Giving them attention just gives them exactly what they want and ensures that more readers have to suffer through their assholery. Make Jezebel a happier place for everyone who isn't a racist troll.

"I go to UVA" is some kind of magical ticket? I could see some douchey Harvard or Princeton undergrad pulling that nonsense (which is always hilarious to watch), but I had no idea public school kids had that kind of delusional view of their educational choice's loftiness. The only time I used "I go to UCLA" was in Westwood and I knew the place gave student discounts.

You apparently didn't read any of the accompanying article. No one is pretending UVA is a status symbol, it's just a primarily white school in a primarily white area and for a young black man getting harassed by the police mentioning that you go there is part of a (usually futile) attempt to convince the racist pricks that you're "one of the good ones."

UVA is a public Ivy?? It's one of the most illustrious public universities and if you've ever been to Charlottesville, you'd know it's *extremely* white, so being black at UVA is something out of the ordinary.

"...that nothing protects us [black people]. That no matter how well-spoken you are, what clubs you're a part of, or who you're with, you can be infantilized, emasculated, and stripped of all your hard work, and public status in the blink of an eye."

And that, folks, is America in a nut shell.

Here we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Selma, where John Lewis was beaten half to death for demanding civil rights, and I wonder how this time will be remembered in 50 years.

I really hope Martese Johnson- an educated, articulate, well-dressed black man can finally open some people's eyes.
