Diana isn't near the top? I've never thought Kate was the type to name her kid after her husband's dead mom, but I remember when George was still in the oven, everyone expected him to be named either Diana or Elizabeth if he was a girl.

I phrased it in a strange way for brevity I guess, but what I meant was that Kate seems to want to set her own course, out of Diana's shadow.

British friends, is Kate even allowed to name the kid something interesting, or does it have to be a traditional name because of decorum or whatever?

No idea if there's a decorum, but I just don't think she would. She doesn't seem like that sort of person, but also reckon she would be seriously frowned upon (and snarked about by the rich la-de-dah crowd who were desperate to marry Wills and into the royal family before Kate did).

Yes and no. They pick a name but QEII has to approve it. Princess Beatrice would've been Annabelle, but the queen nixed it.

      Or Cnut! Bring back Cnut!

ETA: Cnut's father was Sweyn Forkbeard. You've sent me down a rabbit hole of amazing names.

Great Britain, have you considered that you might have a gambling problem?

We most definately do. You should see the amount of bingo and other online gambling ads are on tv.

The royal name formula is pretty straightforward. They pick the same names they have always picked for 300 years especially if it is a boy though the spare not the heir gets more leeway. For a girl then one of Queen Victoria's daughters. Mainly: monarch name/old medieval king name/ family name. For example - Alexandra Elizabeth Eleanor or Edward David Arthur or Charlotte Mary Rose.

I would like them to go rogue but unlikely. They may pick a name from previous dynasties now that it won't cause trouble - like James which was a bit Stuart and a bit Catholic for a long time. Or maybe even a Richard!

Actually one name not seen mentioned for a boy is Frederick. They may go for this. It is traditional and posh enough without being too samey.

Also for a girl Sophia because Sophia of Hanover was the reason why the royals went German. And it is uber popular in Kate and Wills peer group anyway.

I love gambling on US politics over here. I made £50 betting that Mitt Romney would be the Republican nominee last time, and I've got a bet on Jeb Bush at 6-1 to be the nominee this time. And I couldn't resist a flutter on Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee at 33-1.

It will definitely be Elizabeth or Charlotte. Yawn.

... Although, I personally think Britannia would be brilliant. Carries a lot of weight and it would be a crowd pleaser.

Remember last timey hey were expecting someone mentioned the name Frogmella? I still think that's a great choice for a girl. And Thomas for a boy, because why not?

I don't think it will be Alexandra. Her son's middle name is Alexander. At least I hope not. The repetitiveness would drive me nuts. Like you already have a small pool of names to pick from, YOU CAN'T PICK ANYTHING OUTSIDE THE FEMININE VERSON OF A NAME YOU ALREADY USED? Like this girl in my class in high school named Isabelle Elizabeth. Drove me fucking BONKERS.
