They should just let the condemned inmate crash a car into an abandoned house.

I think the movies have it right. Turn it into a game. Let regular people - hunters, honeymooners, bucket listers - hunt the condemned for a small fee. If the con makes it to the endpoint he gets life in prison. Otherwise, problem solved.

Honestly, as a left of center realist, about fricken time.

If you're for the death penalty, then you should be for bringing back the firing squad and/or guillotine. To say the only humane way to execute people is by lethal injection is ridiculous. Lethal injection allows some to perceive the death penalty as something less than messy. Fact is: it is messy. And great care should be used to excersise this right of the State.

Or, be against the death penalty and be against killing people.

    Just don't be hypocritical.

And if you're for the death penalty, none of this 'one or more guns will have a blank' so the firing squad members can walk away believing it's possible their shot didn't just kill someone.

If you truly believe the death penalty is just and right - why is there the mindset that shooters need to be given a glimmer of doubt that they fired a bullet in carrying it out?

Well, it can be more dignified.

Took me a while to place the quote. Funny as it was seared into my memory at the time.

      Good movie. Rule 303!

Another good one based on the only soldier executed for desertion during WW2. Fast forward to 1:30.

This keeps us in the company of all the other freedom-loving countries that use firing squads on their citizens.

I can't recall a time I was more physically repulsed by the act of a state than reading this head line.

We are literally going backwards now. Lets just beat each other senseless with stones and be done with it. The last person standing can starve to death come winter.

Well, there really aren't freedom-loving countries that use the death penalty period. If we're going to use it, this is probably the best method (fastest death and people trained in method).

I don't understand this shortage of drugs things. I mean, couldn't they just put someone under general anesthesia. At that point, they are not going to feel anything or have any idea what is going on. Seems like there would be dozens of drugs that they could be injected with at that point to end life "painlessly"

(Not necessarily an endorsement of the death penalty. Just confused on this issue.)

Oddly enough, nobody seems to be lining up to sell us the drugs we need for this undertaking.

      Call it a free-market solution.

For one thing, you'd still need doctors to participate and give the anesthesia, and there's a shortage of doctors willing to do so. You could also probably argue that injecting other drugs falls under experimentation on prisoners. It isn't like we routinely use medication to kill people in the USA, so I'm betting only a few drugs have been 'marked' for that purpose. Using a drug for a purpose it isn't marketed for is 'off label' use, and while it is routinely done for various reasons, I'm sure medical law would come into play if you were using it to kill people without any kind of base or guidelines. Also, the 'shortage' referenced isn't so much a shortage as it is a result of the drug makers not wanting their drugs used for lethal injection for PR reasons. Switch to a different drug and the same thing will happen, causing another 'shortage'.

If people are squeamish about firing squads maybe they should reconsider capital punishment altogether.

It's so inappropriate to laugh but I did anyway when I saw this as an AP push earlier. Because only in America do people start trying to shame us and withhold the 'good stuff' to kill people to try to make us get rid of the death penalty and we respond by bringing the old school shit back.

If this doesn't highlight this country's stubbornness, I don't know what will.
