My commute is long as shit, and I enjoy it! About 45 minutes of driving and then 45 minutes of sleeping on a train. Then, the same thing in reverse to get back home. Add in the walking and waiting and I get pretty close to a 4 hour round trip. Lots of me time.

The only thing I dislike really, is the cost of that commute, but that's offset by the lower cost of living where I live, and the higher average income, where I work.

My commute is a 7 minute walk. I feel like there should be a helpline for people with commutes like yours. Nothing too serious, just a place you can call to talk to someone when you're stuck on a train etc. They tell you the weather, a couple jokes, and some tips to pass the time, like making sure you stretch and stay hydrated.

It's good for my liver, trust me. My commute for 4 years before this job was 5 feet from my bed to my desk and I spent the entire time in my underwear, and all of my money on alcohol and ciggarettes. And I was broke with no insurance. I'm a terrible entrepreneur.

I truly don't mean to be snarky, but why do people keep moving there? Is it really just the whole people-are-sheep thing? It's expensive as shit, jobs are competitive, if you can even afford to keep a car it's impossible to drive anywhere, and there are tons of cities with their own culture and benefits fast approaching NY without all the bullshit, filth, etc. Seriously - why?

I'm a fucking artist and I don't get it. And yeah, maybe I'm a little bitter about all the friends that left for brooklyn, but I'm the one who is gainfully employed and can afford rent without checks from Daddy (because in my case those types of checks don't exist) so who's laughing now, asshats.

I used to know a guy who occupied an apartment above the office in which he worked. Short commute? Yes. But this quite honestly would be my personal hell.

Agreed. My most hideous commute ever was when I drove 5 miles to my job. Just enough time to get your eyes glazed over with pissiness and not enough time to unwind.

Now I am one of those folks who commute into NYC via mass transit. I can basically see my office from my apt. in Hoboken but the commute takes me 45 minutes each way. It is just about my favorite part of the day (when it doesn't get effed up). Read Terry Pratchett, play Word Farrago and ignore everyone on the train.

I don't know this "Dayna" person, are you Hamilton's understudy? More to the point: New York Sucks. Lived there for 10 years, finally gave up when I was forced to move to (pre-gentrified) Bed-Stuy. I went to museums a few times, ate out infrequently - mostly I spent my money on overpriced alcohol, getting drunk with my friends, like all 20 to 30 year old's do wherever they live. Artists used to live in NY because it was cheap - why do they still live there? Inertia? That's not really a good excuse.

I've lived all over the world and I never found anything particularly charming about NYC over other major cities. I think it's just a good PR machine.

New Yorkers seem to think that it's the only major city in the world with a vibrant arts scene, good food and exciting night life.

Its a fun city but it's no more fun than like Seoul or Istanbul.

Long commute by train = ::opens book, kills off a bunch of chapters::

Long commute by car = stopped doing that in 2005, and I sure as shit won't be doing it ever again.

Yeah, big difference here. Driving is more tiring, you can't do things like read or text (or at least you shouldn't), you make it like 13987138917% more likely that you will die in a fiery crash, and you don't get to walk at all. I don't live in NYC, but I don't feel sorry for them for their commute. I feel sorry for people who live in LA.

After college, I got a job with the hospital my mom worked at (different department, thankfully), and was living at home. We commuted from Southern NH to Boston via I-93, which meant anywhere from 3 - 6 hours in the car, round trip, with my mother. That killed any affinity I could have ever had for commuting via auto.

6 hours a week commuting? thats really not that bad, thats like 20mins each way to work/home. Even at my old place, it took nearly 45mins an hour each way to drive 15 miles.

His commitment to making a healthy lunch is impressive. Although he only seems to eat granola otherwise, so without the lunch he'd probably die of scurvy.

Part of our New York work ethic is actually reading the entire blockquote, to say nothing of reading the source article.
