    I've witnessed American political candidates do the same thing, because the only thing that could endanger their victory would be some kind of severe public gaffe, and staying out of the spotlight reduces that risk. As he's still taking meetings behind closed doors, this appears to be the same strategy. He's keeping his head down, waiting for the assassination story to blow over, in full knowledge that Russia remains his country long after the protesters go home.

      imagine the mockery he'd be subjected to if he turned up with duck lips/wonky eyes/cheek implants.. that would be more damaging to his grip on power than invading ... (insert country here).
