I already had a FB friend bemoan the lack of separation of church and state... And then go on to say that this country was founded on Christian principles. #confusion I'm looking hard for a pot for her to piss in, but I'm coming up short.

Some people have an immunity to cognitive dissonance. Lots of people I know complain about the size of the government yet, well, I'm sure you know how that goes.

The problem is that now New York City schools won't let out until June 28 next year (a Tuesday, by the way). Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Eid al-Adha, and Good Friday all add an extra week of school to the calendar. And Chinese families, understandably, have been lobbying for Chinese New Year off. The city should just give families and teachers 3 floating excused absence days.

This is a reason I really think schools should just go year round. More holidays during the year helps break things up without the brain drain that happens in the summer.

As another poster pointed out this disrupts lessons plans and can effect students grades.

      I can adapt.
How many infidels* must I burn before breakfast? Please advise.

*Is infidels** the mooslem^ word for calories, or for fat? I confuse this distinction often. Please advise.

**Is infidels an English word now because De Blasio is a mooslem? Please advise.

their shifting placement will no doubt confuse teachers and students and administrators for years to come

Speaking of this, why is it that every fucking year people are surprised by when Easter is? I swear I've heard four different people remark, "Wow, Easter is early this year!" Every. Fucking. Year.

Well, Easter does move around on a very weird schedule (the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, the full moon that occurs on or soonest after 21 March) because it is obviously a remnant of a far more ancient celebration having to do with springtime, not an actual anniversary of a (supposed) event.) So, yeah, it probably does confuse people.

It is a shame it is just schools. When i lived in the US one of the things i hated about the US was lack of paid days you can have off, in UK i had around 5 weeks ( Almost all workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday per year) and at my job in US i had nothing.

I used to work in London. Shout out to all those "Bank Holiday Mondays" whatever they were.

Three day weekends all over the place!

The US offices did seem to get a whole lot more work done...but quality of life, nope.

I found it really hard living in US, I just remember my co-worker coming back a few days after giving birth because she could not afford to go without being paid for two weeks (Unpaid maternity leave is mandated only only for companies with 50 or more employees within a certain amount of miles and you have to work there for a year). Also childcare was a huge issue and luckily she had support from her parents. In US a lot do like to call countries that have paid time off lazy and i find it sad how brainwashed some are.

Yeah, I'm the asshole who doesn't think schools should shut down for religious holidays (also, that Christmas has no business being a Federal holiday). If people want to observe their religion, let them make arrangements. (A certain amount of floating holidays per student/person, for instance.)

I really like this idea for professional settings, but it gets a little weird with mandatory schooling. Say you're a teacher. Half your class is in religion A and the other in religion B. Without a school holiday for important religious occasions, you're losing half your class a few times a year. Do you go ahead and teach the next lesson, knowing half your class will be behind? Or do you play Jeopardy and/or draw pictures of cats?

If you're a teacher with one dominant religion in your class, you're losing most of your students a few times a year.

This is so important. I grew up in CA where Mexican American children often miss several days or even a week of school a year because the districts don't break when most Mexican families travel for the holidays. This directly impacts children's scholastic success. And it is ridiculous, when a significant number if not the majority of your students are taking off at a certain time, to not recognize that and build it into the calendar. This will vastly improve student performance.

Aw, one nice piece of news! Excellent. I have a friend who will love this—she was bummed that she always had to miss university courses for Eid. I can tell her that at least part of the country is slowly getting on board.
