I just can't figure out why:

    1: The safety was off

2: The fucking thing was loaded

You want to own a gun? Fine. But this isn't a goddamn action movie. There aren't bad guys lurking around every corner, eager to rob you of your virtue and your freedom. This isn't the Wild West, there won't be a gun fight when the clock strikes noon. If you want to own a gun, you have to be responsible. Your rights don't suddenly overtake the rights of everyone else, no matter how much you may wish otherwise. Because this is what happens when you refuse to accept the reality of owning a dangerous weapon instead of the fantasy.

Be a responsible gun owner, you stupid fuckwaffle.

Revolvers don't have safeties. They also don't have clips that can be ejected.

That said, this woman is clearly a moron who shouldn't be around guns or children.

While that explains the lack of a safety, I still can't understand why it needed to be loaded.

I can't come up with any other reason than she was stupid.

I don't own a gun, but I've heard of this thing called a "safety", which, when engaged, is supposed to keep a gun from firing inadvertently. Isn't that gun safety 101? Or was this lady so worried about a sudden attack that the time it would take to disengage the safety switch would have taken just too much time?

Everything about this story screams "inexperienced dipshit with a liking for hardware way beyond their ability to use". Aka, someone who had no absolutely no business even picking up a gun outside of a shooting range...with supervision.

How about the dipshit in Florida who was showing off how fast he could draw his gun in a restaurant when it went off and killed a pregnant woman? Not only was he not charged with anything, he got to keep his guns. Pure fucking insanity.

Are there legitimate reasons to carry a gun? Yes there are. There are several.

Are there gun owners who safely and responsibly carry their guns every day? Yes there are. Several hundred thousand.

Do accidents happen? Yes they do. All the time, everywhere, and only a very incredibly small amount of them involve guns.

Now, having said all that, and for full disclosure, I am a gun owner, and I support peoples right to own guns. Notice, however, I said own, not carry. Because, quite frankly, 99% of the people who have concealed carry permits and actively carry do so for one reason only; because they can. They have no real reason to carry. But they do because the law says they can.

And even though it will make me even more unpopular than I am right now, I can make a good argument that big reason for the fact that more people are carrying now than ever is because of the anti-gun crowd.

The NRA is a very organized group. And every time someone brings up new gun control ideas, they rally the troops to push gun rights harder on people. They say, "They want to take your guns!", so more people exercise their gun rights to make it harder to take those guns away.

Believe it or not, the NRA isn't all bad. They do push for safety. They constantly offer classes on how to safely handle firearms. They give large sums of money to help organizations promote gun safety. But because they are very well organized and intent on defending gun rights, all their work towards safety is ignored.

I could easily get a permit to carry my handgun. But I won't. Because I have no reason to carry a gun on me. And if people who owned guns practiced safety instead of just giving it lip service, there would be far fewer accidents.

But, like my gradndad used to say, "You need a license to drive, a license to fish, a license to get married and a license for your dog. But they'll let any idiot have kids." They'll also let any idiot own guns. I'm not saying we should restrict peoples rights to having children. I'm saying we need to restrict their right to be idiots. If this woman had no valid reason to carry a gun, and she was carrying it just because she could, she should be charged with the crime of child endangerment.

Of note: The NRA is not an advocate for the gun owner. It's the lobbying group for gun manufacturers. Therein lies the whole problem, really.

The fact that people just casually walk around America with guns on their person terrifies me. I'm a New Zealander living in Australia, and even with the drop bears I can't fathom it.

Same for this Canadian. It's actually become a problem at the border crossings, Americans trying to bring their guns with them when they visit Canada because they don't understand it's not legal to walk about with a gun here.

Why Why Why is anyone in this country casually walking around with a fucking handgun around their 4-year-old?

Because you never know which of the other four-year-olds will be a bad guy with a gun. Think of the children?

See...I'd have far less of an issue with gun ownership if I could trust that the owners were overwhelmingly responsible, rational, intelligent people. Unfortunately, idiots like this, the open carry nuts, and the NRA seem to be doing their very best to demonstrate that at least a very large minority of gun of owners are majorly stupid nutbags who I wouldn't trust to safely handle a spork, much less a tool actually designed to harm people.

And seriously, what the hell could you possibly need a .357 for while just walking around? Sounds so much like those idiots who go buy desert eagles for the ego boost, even though they've got no clue how to safely or effectively handle it.

Shit, statistically most of them are. Keep in mind there's a gun for every man, woman and child in the US (more by now, probably) and the vast majority of us will never get shot. It's kind of like cars: Most people can drive responsibly, but it just takes one fuckhead.

That is one of the reasons why I am in favour of purchasing licenses for guns, and if you've demonstrated you are not fit for it, you can't have one. Like we don't allow people to drive a car if they have shown they drink and drive all the time.

What the hell kinda holster is that if a gun just falls out of it? Can I *hope* that it's generally a good holster that was damaged or came undone and allowed the gun to slide out? Otherwise...ugh.
