I'm almost 100% sure that's not their actual acronym, its just the frat bros making fun of the lgbt club because they're assholes.

I'm curious: How'd this ruling come about, do we know?

They have a small point in the sense that a policy should generally be consistently applied, but it does seem that said policy IS consistently applied, just you rarely find a white woman in the Women of Color housing.

Cash money a DKE bro tries to get into at least one of these spaces before the end of the calendar year.

Probably, which is the problem with it. you may have the best of intentions but the devil is in the details. Like how the Christians wanting access to public spaces is back-firing with other groups demanding access.

OK I have been reading Jezebel for 8+ years and am making this my first comment ever because this article is kind of misleading. My boyfriend was (is?) a Wesleyan DKE so I do have more of an insider's perspective. I just want to set the record straight.

For starters - DKE at Wesleyan, and honestly all fraternities at Wes for that matter, are verrrrry tame compared to ones at bigger, more mainstream schools. DKE consists almost entirely of athletes, which may sound like the perfect storm of frat bros + entitled jocks, but they really are a decent bunch. They mostly just join so that they can all live in a house together with their teammates to throw silly themed parties (DKEs of Hazzard etc.). I always felt very comfortable in their house as a woman. I could honestly not imagine any one of the DKEs I know doing something disrespectful or harmful to a woman.

With that out of the way, my boyfriend is on a DKE email chain regarding this topic and the main reason that DKE is suing Wesleyan is because they are being suspended from the housing program with no real justification. First, president Roth wanted them to go co-ed, which they agreed to do. They had 3 years to do so. Then, they were informed on February 6th that the DKE house would not be eligible as an on-campus housing option for the school year of 2015-2016 without any explanation. So, Roth gave them 5 months instead of 3 years, which is what DKE is suing them for. Those are the "deceptive practices". And they're saying that what Roth did was "discriminatory" because this was clearly his agenda all along because he knew that there would not have been any way for DKE to become fully co-ed in such a short period of time.

From the press release that is linked in the article:

Nevertheless, instead of the three year's time promised, the University fast-tracked its decision to deny DKE housing rights less than five months after its initial demand, and two days before the University's housing selection process began. As a result, the student members of DKE fraternity have inexplicably and without reasonable notice been stripped of their rights to on-campus housing and the fraternity denied the annual rental income it is entitled to as owner of the property.

The college is saying they tried to work with DKE and they refused to cooperate. http://www.businessinsider.com/wesleyan-dke-f...

I don't disagree that they shouldn't be forced to be co-ed. But, if that's their premise, if their national charter or something requires it and Wesleyan doesn't want any single-sex institutions on their campus, then remove the fraternities.

[Women's college alum who fully supports the right to single sex spaces. Eventually society will determine which ones should and should not exist.]

I think this article is describing Wesleyan's request wrong—if I remember correctly, Wesleyan isn't forcing all Greek organizations to go co-ed, just all housed Greek organizations. There are a couple other fraternities that are unhoused, as are all their sororities, and they'll face no changes. I'm guessing the school consulted with their lawyers before instating that policy, as that's the loophole that will allow them to easily deflect any discrimination charges—nobody's actually forcing the fraternities to go co-ed. They're just saying that they have to choose between staying all-male and keeping their houses.

Ah, so it's a housing and not an organizational issue. Interesting. And yes, the college was undoubtedly more certain of its legal footing that way.

What these gripes about being selectively targeted tend to ignore is that the Women of Color House and the Turath House and the like aren't discriminating. "All who are committed to women of color on campus," isn't a category that's restricted to women of color, and you don't have to be Arab, Middle Eastern and/or Muslim to participate in providing a space for them to articulate their views and affirm their culture. There probably aren't a lot of white, Christian dudes in either house, but there probably wouldn't be a ton of women rushing a frat, either.

I went to a large Canadian university and the only frat we heard anything about on campus was the DKE. And it was never good. They were the epitome of dude-bro assholes before dude-bro was even a thing. They had a polar bear rug that was KNOWN.

Why anyone in their right mind would want to join that rapey frat is beyond my comprehension. There are many others, many decent humans, join them if you must!

So by making their club more diverse... they're complaining that the diversity is being harmed? I don't follow this logic.
