My 94 year old grandpa died after driving his car into a river (he thought the boat ramp was an exit ramp). We were all just thankful he didn't slam into a school bus. This country should do more to provide quality transit for senior citizens, instead of allowing them behind the wheel.

I'm so sorry. We had to have my father-in-law's license revoked (my enabling MIL was not on board). It was quite a battle until the doctors stepped in.

The DMVs really should do more to ensure people can still drive with rechecks every five years or so.

Sorry for you as well. It is a battle, understandably, which is precisely why it becomes so hard to regulate this kind of thing.

I read that the driver said his foot got stuck and he panicked. Quite a bit different scenario than "medical emergency" although if I were him, I'd be making up a medical emergency, too.

it seems like he panicked and then slammed his foot on the accelerator, which is the safest thing to do when you panic in your car.

Second safest thing to do is change gears from drive to reverse and then back to drive. The only reason he's alive is because he did this, along with never letting off the accelerator.

There are any number of medical emergencies that leave you capable of steering the car and moving the gear shift from reverse to drive to reverse to drive, but make it impossible to take your foot off the gas pedal. This guy's story is totally legit!

With the aging of America, this is going to become more and more of a problem. Heck, it already is a problem. Where are the cars that drive themselves???? We need 'em for the elderly. Seriously, I think every state should require some basic DRIVING TEST at 80. Most states, all you have to do is pass an eye test and you are good to go for another 5-8-10 years. My mother who is 88 had a fender bender in a parking lot in Nov. and another one in Dec. Her car is now sold, to prevent her from injuring a child, someone else, or herself while driving. You just have to GET TOUGH for the safety of everyone.
